About us

Holbeton is a substantial village set near the wooded flanks of the river Erme, nine miles east of Plymouth. Situated within the South Hams district, this idyllic hamlet is surrounded by lush greenery, rolling hills, and meandering waterways, creating a postcard-perfect setting that attracts visitors seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Holbeton's allure lies in its remoteness, offering a true escape from the demands of modern life. The rural landscape, combined with the enveloping embrace of centuries-old structures, imparts a delightful historic ambiance, creating an ideal setting to immerse oneself in the essence of this quintessentially Devonian village.

History of Holbeton

To the east of the village is an Iron Age hill fort known as Holbury. Historically the parish formed part of Ermington Hundred and it contains several historic estates.

Perched near the summit of a very steep hill, Holbeton’s All Saints Church commands attention with its imposing presence. The centuries-old spire of this ecclesiastical building reaches skyward, often visible from the roadside even before the village itself comes into view. With origins dating back to the 14th century, if not earlier, the church's interior is a treasure trove of historical wonders. Stained glass windows cast a kaleidoscope of colours, an intricately carved rood screen adds to the visual splendour, and a monument dedicated to the affluent Heles family stands as a testament to local history. For those fortunate enough to peer inside, the experience is nothing short of enchanting.

Things to do in Holbeton

Beyond its historical landmarks, Holbeton boasts a close-knit community that values tradition and local camaraderie.

The surrounding countryside offers a myriad of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Footpaths and bridleways crisscross the landscape, inviting hikers and nature lovers to explore the stunning scenery. The nearby coastline adds an extra layer of allure, with hidden coves and sandy beaches providing a peaceful retreat for those seeking seaside serenity. Something a little different

For a unique experience in Holbeton, consider exploring the village's agricultural heritage at the annual Wassail festival, an event that celebrates the village's ties to the land and the bounty of the harvest season by awakening their apple trees and chasing away the bad spirits to ensure a good harvest for the year to come!

As the sun sets over Holbeton, casting a warm glow on its thatched cottages and cobblestone streets, it becomes evident that this Devonshire village is not just a place on the map; it's a living testament to the timeless charm and enduring spirit of rural England.
