48 hours in Plymouth
Day 1
10.00AM:
Your first port of call should be the historic harbour setting of the Barbican. Visit our Tourist Information Centre at the Plymouth Mayflower building to view the exhibition, which chronicles the story of the Pilgrim Fathers and their journey to the New World. Take advantage of the friendly and knowledgeable staff , who will be pleased to help you plan the rest of your visit.
11.00AM:
Visit the Mayflower Steps where in 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers embarked on the Mayflower voyage to the Americas. Take in the stunning setting of marinas, cobbled streets and the Royal Citadel. Head across the bridge to the National Marine Aquarium.
12.30PM
Return to the Barbican and explore the antiques markets near Island House which hosts the list of names of the Pilgrim Fathers, then visit Plymouth’s oldest street, New Street and its Elizabethan House and Elizabethan Gardens, transporting you back over the centuries with its cobbled streets.
Head along Southside Street and visit the many art galleries and independent shops. Enjoy a tour and sample the renowned Plymouth Gin, in its historic distillery.
Lunch
Stay on the Barbican to enjoy a traditional Devon cream tea, some fresh local seafood or a quick snack in one of the many harbour side restaurants, taking in the scenic waterside views.
2.00PM:
Walk northwards across Notte Street toward the city centre to explore further shopping, including the Independent West End Quarter and the east end Drake Circus Shopping centre.
Visit Plymouth Hoe, our waterfront park, straight along Armada Way from the city centre. Explore the war memorials, stand where Sir Francis Drake played his famous game of bowls, enjoy the spectacular views across Plymouth Sound, climb Smeaton’s Tower or enjoy a break at one of the cafes along the foreshore.
7.00PM:
After a quick break back at your hotel why not head out again for a fine dining experience in one of our many local restaurants. Choose from city centre dining, including Tanners, the AA award winning restaurant of ‘TV’ chefs Chris and James Tanner, or walk along the heritage trail at Sutton Harbour to enjoy a selection of sea food, Italian, Spanish, Asian, Moroccan or good ol’ British food.
Day 2
10.00AM:
Take a relaxing and inspiring boat trip from the Barbican along the foreshore and the River Tamar to view our fine naval heritage and beautiful scenery.
1.00PM:
After lunch hop on the Discovery Tour bus to explore the city’s heritage, taking in the Royal William Yard and city centre.
2.00PM:
Then relax with a leisurely afternoon at one of our nearby country parks at Mount Edgcumbe, the National Trust’s Saltram House or visit southern Dartmoor to see the ponies. If your idea of relaxation is a little more adventurous try a mackerel fishing trip, windsurfing or Jet ski lessons at Mount Batten Watersports Centre or try your skill on the cresta run at Plymouth Ski Centre.
9.00PM:
For your evening entertainment visit the Theatre Royal or Plymouth Pavilions to complete a break you’re sure to remember and make you want to come back again, for more.
