Explore Plymouth – no car needed

For the intrepid visitor Plymouth has a great deal to offer beyond the central visitor area. These are just a few personal snapshots of the places you can visit around Plymouth using public transport and the water taxi.

Royal William Yard

One of the Royal Navy’s major supply depots from the 19^th century now reinstated as a residential and visitor area. Open to all throughout the year there is a great cafe bar on the quayside.

Mount Batten

For great views back across Plymouth Sound this former Royal Air Force Flying Boat Station has become a must visit destination. With bars and restaurants Mountbatten is also the home of the Mount Batten Water Sports centre. Again this is easily accessed by Water Taxi from the Barbican and if get time do take the walk to Jennycliff for spectacular views across the Sound to Plymouth and Cornwall.

Mount Edgcumbe

Overlooking the City from South East Cornwall Mount Edgcumbe House is jointly owned by Cornwall & Plymouth and houses the National Camellia Collection. Access is by Passenger Ferry from Stonehouse – The Cremyll Ferry. Once over the short crossing of the River Tamar you will find a great waterside pub, cafe orangery and a wild deer park.

Central Park

The home of Plymouth’s sports centre and Championship Football team – Plymouth Argyle - this large park offers a great view over the city toward the Sound and is easily accessed by public transport or even on foot! It is also the home base for the Diving Legend teenager Tom Daley - current world champion.

Brunel's Railway Bridge

One of the masterpieces of the Golden Age of Engineering. Constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1845 to carry the Great Western Railway line from London to Penzance, the unique construction is best viewed from below in either Plymouth or Saltash.

Devonport Dockyard

The largest Naval Base in Western Europe and home to Flag Officer Sea Training for the Royal Navy and NATO, Devonport stretches along the River Tamar. The best views are provided by the Dockyard Cruises from the Barbican.

Saltram House, Plympton , Plymouth.

This magnificent Georgian House with opulant Robert Adam interiors, gardens, follies and landscaped parkland is just a 20 minute bus ride from the city centre .
