Marine attractions
The National Marine Aquarium is the first aquarium in the UK to be a leading visitor attraction as well as a centre of excellence in education and research. Situated on the Barbican waterfront it offers magnificent views across The Sound and provides an action packed half day of observation and interaction to all things that live in the sea.
The iconic Atlantic Ocean tank proudly displays the best collection of sharks and rays in Europe. Ocean Drifters – the UK’s largest collection of jellyfish - will mesmerise you and Coral Seas will leave you uplifted and relaxed. With over 50 tanks, a 4D cinema, Discovery Zone and underwater vehicle there’s plenty of entertainment to be had whilst taking in the importance of the marine environment to us all.
HMS Scylla, an Exocet Leader Class Frigate was decommissioned in 1993 and bought by the National Marine Aquarium in 2003 to be placed on the seabed as a reef. Hundreds of fish have been reported on Scylla and the site is a great attraction for scuba divers keen to view its fast development and experience Plymouth from a different perspective.
