Plymouth Armed Forces Day wins gold at South West Tourism Awards
7th February 2017
We’ve scooped our second gold award for last year’s Plymouth Armed Forces Day, beating off stiff competition to win a top spot at the South West Tourism Awards.
Having won gold at the Devon Tourism Awards in late 2016 the event went on to the regional awards in Bristol on Thursday 2 February, where it was named Tourism Event and Festival of the Year.
It fought off competition from last year’s gold winner, the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival, as well as other formidable events including Looe Music Festival and Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.
Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “As a military city, Plymouth has a strong link to the armed forces and puts a lot of effort into its Armed Forces Day event. I’m delighted that the hard work of our events team and our partners has been recognised once more with this fantastic award. With planning already under way for this year’s event we hope we’ll be able to look forward to winning more awards like this in the future.”
Sponsored by Babcock International, UTC Aerosystems, C and G Catering and supported by the Royal British Legion and Plymouth Citybus, Plymouth Armed Forces Day is one of the largest and most popular armed forces events in the country, recognising the service and contribution of current personnel and veterans.
Other Plymouth award winners on the night included: Plymouth Gin (silver in the Artistic, Cultural and Learning Experience category); Bovey Castle (silver for Hotel of the Year); Glazebrook House Hotel, (gold for Small Hotel/Boutique Accommodation of the Year) and the National Marine Aquarium (gold for Sustainable Tourism).
