An Open Air Cinema event is a staple of the summer season in a lot of big cities. There are plenty of them in London but thankfully, you don’t have to travel four hours to see old classics and new blockbusters in the great outdoors. Instead you can take a short trip to Mount Edgcumbe, Tinside Lido or the Royal William Yard to see classics like Grease, Back to the Future and my personal favourite Jaws. Or you can see some brilliant recent blockbusters like Star Wars: Rogue One or this summer’s Wonder Woman.

Plymouth Arts Centre have held regular Open Air showings for a number of years and have been more successful with each subsequent year. Last year I was lucky enough to get tickets for last year’s screening of Jaws which was in high demand and like this year, sold out more quickly than the other screenings. The showing was at the famous outdoor swimming pool Tinside Lido and it was an amazing opportunity to watch an iconic film about the ocean, sat right by the ocean. I went to see it with my friends who also brought their son with them. He had seen Jurassic Park but had yet to experience Jaws. Despite the film being forty years old and the potential distraction of playing Pokémon Go, the film captured his attention and he was fixated by the action in front of him. I have seen Jaws countless times but watching it on the big screen felt like I was watching it for the first time again. The added effect of an ocean cinema setting made for a unique experience which you would struggle to get outside of Plymouth.

Whilst Tinside is a great setting, Mount Edgcumbe also offers a fantastic ocean view but the Royal William Yard offers a more atmospheric setting. In recent years September has been one of the better months for summer weather. A few years ago I volunteered to help steward the Grease event and it was a perfect summer’s evening. The audience were very much enjoying the classic musical and by the end, there were plenty of singing, dancing and alcohol flowing. It was a brilliant way to end the summer. I am sure the atmosphere will be much the same at the Mount Edgcumbe showing.

Having been to a few Open Air screenings over the years I would highly recommend it as some of the best events Plymouth has to offer over the course of the summer. It’s a great evening out and won’t cost the earth and I for one am looking forward to attending a few screenings this year.
