More people than ever are choosing a plant based diet – whether for environmental, animal welfare or health reasons – and the charity Veganuary encourages people to go vegan for the whole month of January. Last year, an estimated 1.31 million people in the UK gave up animal products for January!

With this huge rise in popularity, there are now loads of brilliant plant-based options to enjoy when you’re eating out.

We’ve pulled together a list of the best cafes and restaurants in Plymouth to try if you’re looking for vegan dining:

Bonne Santé

With a focus on fresh produce and great flavour, a whopping 80% of Bonne Santé’s menu is vegan friendly! Enjoy a delicious plant-based brunch, with scrambled sriracha tofu or roasted cherry tomatoes on sweet potato toast among the options, or tuck into a mixed vegetable stir-fry for lunch that’s just packed with goodness.

There’s plenty of choice on their dinner menu too, with everything from vegan burgers to soups. While you’re there, why not indulge with a drink from their impressive cocktail menu too – which uses high quality, low calorie ingredients.

Samphire Brasserie

Going vegan doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your favourite treats, and Samphire Brasserie is exclusively vegan, serving up a delicious array of vegan junk food! Here you can tuck into ‘Kruelty Free Cooking Buckets’ with crispy fried seitan, pizza, burgers, dirty fries and milkshakes – safe in the knowledge that no animal products have been used.

Cosmic Kitchen

Having swiftly jumped to the #1 rated Plymouth restaurant on Trip Advisor, Cosmic Kitchen offer ‘Good Mood Food’ and an entirely vegan menu! From 12 January 2020, they’ll be based in Sir John Hawkins Square (in the building formerly run as ‘The Mission’ restaurant). You can expect a great range of food here, including delicious salads, soups and roasts!

This incredible eatery is tucked away on the mezzanine level of Plymouth Market, serving up fabulously tasty Vietnamese dishes – all cooked to order. They’ve got a great range of vegan dishes on offer, including curries, noodles, salads and summer rolls.

They’re not the only venue in the Market catering for vegans either! Check out Tea & Bun for vegan ramen, Tilt for vegan sliders and loaded fries, Knead for vegan sourdough pizza and Kawaffle for scrumptious vegan waffles. Head to the Plymouth Market website to see everything on offer.

The Harbour

Situated on the Barbican, at the edge of the water, The Harbour is best known for its fresh fish and seafood. But if you’re missing the taste of the seaside, head here for completely vegan fish and chips, made using banana blossom and served up with a vegan tartare sauce. You can also try salt & pepper ‘squid rings’, made using oyster mushrooms and enjoy a non-dairy ice cream for pudding!

Las Iguanas

You’ll find Plymouth’s Las Iguanas in the beautiful and historic Royal William Yard. Step inside the vibrant restaurant and let your taste buds take a trip to South America! Their menu features a huge range of vegan options, including jackfruit curry and tacos, nachos, sweet potato burritos and tempting desserts – the chocolate coconut tart sounds delicious.

Another Royal William Yard based restaurant, Wagamama serves up delicious fresh Japanese food. They've got an impressive range of vegan options, from katsu curry to panko aubergine steamed buns, gyoza, noodle bowls and delicious desserts too. This year, Wagamama also has a Veganuary special - vegan suika 'tuna', made using dehydrated watermelon steak, served hot from the wok!

Turtle Bay

For the flavour of the Caribbean, head to the lively and soulful Turtle Bay in Plymouth city centre. Ask for their vegan menu, which includes plenty of delicious dishes – from fiery jerk tofu, to ‘buddha bowls’ packed with veg, or vegan burgers. For brunch, tuck into the ‘big vegan grill down’ with jerk mushrooms, curried chickpeas, avocado, romatoes, plantain and roti.

The Stable

Famous for their pizzas and impressive range of cider, The Stable has loads of vegan options on the menu! Tuck into vegan pizzas like the Green Dragon – with spinach, tenderstem broccoli, pesto, leeks and fresh chilli – or a Squish Squash pie with curried sweet potato and butternut squash. They even have vegan garlic bread, so you won’t feel like you’re missing out on a thing.

Boringdon Hall

Experience true luxury at the stunning five-star Boringdon Hall Hotel, home to two restaurants which both serve up plenty of vegan options. Dine in their Gallery Restaurant, which boasts three AA rosettes and offers a fixed price vegan menu with delicately presented dishes.

Alternatively, their Mayflower Brasserie has a range of vegan options on the a la carte menu including risottos, salads, stews and burgers.

For a quintessentially British treat, why not book a vegan afternoon tea, served in the dramatic surroundings of their Great Hall? Enjoy decadent treats including chocolate and salted caramel slices and scones.
