Six of the UK's best pyrotechnics companies are busy preparing for an explosive showdown with less than a month to go before the British Firework Championships returns to Plymouth Hoe on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 August.

Hosted by The Event Services Association (TESA) and Plymouth City Council in association with The Herald and the University of St Mark & St John, the Championships celebrate their 18th anniversary this year and are one of the biggest annual displays put on by professional firework companies anywhere in the UK.

More than four tonnes of fireworks will be set off over Plymouth Sound, lighting up the skies as the country’s top pyrotechnics companies battle it out for the coveted national title.

Shellscape from Maidenhead in Berkshire will open the competition on the Tuesday, followed by Blitz Fireworks from Crewe in Cheshire and Northern Lights Fireworks from Trowbridge in Wiltshire.

The Competition will continure on the Wednesday with PYRO 1 from Hatfield in Hertfordshire, followed by Reaction Fireworks from Stanley in County Durham. MLE Pyrotechnics from Daventry in Northants will close the competition with the finale performance.

Plymouth’s Hoe offers the perfect viewing platform for this truly incredible sight and thousands of Plymouth residents and holiday makers are expected to turn out for the event.

Entertainment will be starting from 6.30pm each evening, courtesy of Heart Radio. There will also be fairground rides and refreshment stalls and the first firework displays will start at around 9.30pm eacg evening as dusk fall.s

Park and Ride, Parking and Disabled Parking on the Hoe

An extended parking area will be available on the Hoe promenade for blue badge holders, but spaces will be taken on a first come, first served basis. Access will be via Elliott Street entrance to the Hoe promenade from 5.30pm (Madeira Road and Hoe Road will be closed on both days between 1pm and 11pm with some No Parking restrictions from 8am Citadel Road).

The toilets on the Hoe and the Barbican will be open on both evenings, as will those in West Hoe and Mount Batten. There will also be extra toilets on the Hoe.

The multi-storey car park behind the National Marine Aquarium and the nearby Barbican lock gate will be open until 11pm. Most city centre car parks will be open until midnight, but with tens of thousands of people expected to attend the event, they are likely to be very busy and the Council is advising the public to use public transport and park and ride wherever possible.

Drake Circus will be offering parking for only £4 from 4pm until 1am.
