Museums & Galleries

Plymouth's main Museum and Art Gallery is situated right on the edge of the city centre - opposite the main University campus and just a short walk up the road from the Drake Circus shopping mall.

Its galleries showcase the city's art, natural history and human history collections. The building features nine permanent galleries, a shop and cafe plus two additional galleries that display a host of changing exhibitions throughout the year. Some of these exhibitions are curated in-house. Others tour from national museums and galleries.

Plymouth also has smaller, historic 'museums' such as the Elizabethan and Merchant's Houses as well as a host of wonderful art galleries. Many of these are situated around the historic Barbican or in the city centre. You will find classic and contemporary artwork from both local and national artists to suit all tastes and budgets.

Looking to the future

Plymouth is currently working towards the development of a major new visitor attraction that will proudly bring to life our rich and fascinating history. Between now and 2020 we'll be creating and exciting historic and cultural centre that will bring our Museum and Art Gallery and a number of significant archival collections on to one site. The centre will also breathe new life into some of our most influential historic figures such as Scott of the Antarctic and Sir France Drake, as well as share some of our most intriguing historic documents and gems with the public. Take a look at the loveourpast website for more information and for insights into some of the many items in our collections.
