A dramatic 17thC fortress built to defend the coastline from the Dutch. It is still in use today.
Scheduled Guided Tours for 2017 begin on the 16th April through to the 28th September. Starting at 14:30 on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. This season we are also including dates during the October Half Term.
To guarantee a place, please book ahead on the following website citadel.yapsody.com
You will be escorted around the Royal Citadel by a trained Tour Guide, ARMADA TOURS. Please arrive 20 minutes before the tour starts, to give your guide time to take payment. Cash payments only are to be made to the Guide, before the start of each tour. There is no facility to take payment for your reservation online.
You should allow 2 hours for this outdoor walking tour, with some steep inclines up to the ramparts, but accessible to both pushchairs and wheelchairs.
On tour, please follow your tour guide's instructions at all times. As a working Military base there are security restrictions and it is a good idea to bring Photo ID with you. Photography is not permitted inside the Citadel, but you may take photographs of the stunning views across Plymouth Sound from the ramparts.
There are no toilets, parking facilities or refreshments available on site, these facilities can be found on Plymouth Hoe very close to the Citadel.
As it is an operational base, tours may be cancelled at short notice and it's worth checking the Weather Forecast and your Email/Voicemail before making a long journey.
No dogs are allowed, except for guide dogs.
The Citadel is still an operational military establishment; therefore tours may be suspended or cancelled without prior notice. Please do not bring large bags or rucksacks when you visit. Regretfully photography is NOT permitted.
