Thanksgiving Day Event & Lantern Making Workshop
26th October 2016
Plymouth will host the third Illuminate and Thanksgiving event on Thursday 24 November 2016. A number of city and other partners are working together to host and fund this fabulous event including Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Culture, Plymouth and Devon Race Equality Council, Arts Council England, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth College of Art, RIO and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership.
The Illuminate event continues the official countdown to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing in 2020. The aim of the event is to ‘share the light’ and inspire a sense of unity between Plymouth UK and America. This year the Wampanoag native American people's creation story of Moshup the Giant will be celebrated as the Wampanoag were the tribe that greeted and supported the pilgrims on their arrival in the New World.
Crowds will gather at the Mayflower Steps at 4.45pm for a performance by the Mayflower 400 Legacy Choir followed by Illuminate and Thanksgiving speeches starting at 5pm. At 5.40pm the Illuminate lantern, costume and theatre parade will depart from Commercial Wharf, ending up at the Guildhall where spectators will be treated to an illuminated projection show against the building at 6.30pm.
Prior to the parade, Lantern Making Workshops will be held at the Mayflower Museum (3-5 The Barbican) on Saturday 29 October at 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4pm
