About us
This screening of Haneke's masterpiece has been selected to coincide with the Musica Viva performance of Schubert's 'Winterreise' on Saturday 12 October. The film's themes of grief, love lost, ageing and death are signalled in the opening scene where Schubert's Impromptu is played at a piano recital.Georges and Anne are retired music teachers who have spent their lives devoted to their careers and to each other, but when she suffers a stroke and subsequent dementia, Georges has to watch as the person he has loved for so long disappears. The film is haunted by this shadow of loss and death, but remains beautiful, tragic, utterly moving and humane.
