Grading information
National Quality Assessment Schemes
VisitBritain and the AA grade establishments offering accommodation using a set of common quality standards agreed by the AA and the UK tourist authorities: VisitBritain, VisitScotland and Wales Tourist Board. The aim is to make accommodation standards easy to understand and to assure you that establishments meet the standard you expect so that you can make a booking, relax and look forward to your stay.
Accommodation providers are given a star rating from 1 to 5 depending on what type of accommodation is assessed. Both assessing bodies use the same star rating criteria when they assess all types of accommodation. The number of stars gives you an indication of accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and food. Generally, the more stars awarded to a property, the higher its level of quality.
The following descriptions apply to all types of accommodation and can be used as a general guide to what you can expect.
1 star: Simple, comfortable, no frills
2 star: Well presented and well run
3 star: Good level of quality and comfort
4 star: Excellent standard throughout
5 star: Exceptional with a degree of luxury

Local Inspection Schemes
Many local inspection schemes also operate in Devon. All locally inspected accommodation will at least match the standard of the National Scheme One Star; it might well be higher. Each property is assessed for individuality, charm and overall ambience.
VisitBritain Awards
Gold and Silver Awards are given to Hotels and Guest Accommodation that provide exceptional quality in all areas, in particular in service and hospitality. Rose Awards are given to individual caravans where the overall holiday parks services and facilities provide very good or exceptional levels of quality.
