Travelling north from Plymouth, the train passes through peaceful countryside and crosses the striking Calstock Viaduct before reaching the rural terminus at Gunnislake. Highlights along the way include Bere Ferrers, home to a small heritage centre, and the riverside village of Calstock, perfect for walking and pub lunches. It’s a short journey of under an hour, making it perfect for a half-day trip.

From here, the journey becomes a showcase of coastal and countryside beauty. Travel through charming Cornish towns like Liskeard, St Austell and Truro, before reaching Penzance – with its views across Mount’s Bay and towards St Michael’s Mount. For an unforgettable detour, change at St Erth for the St Ives Bay Line, one of the UK’s most scenic branch lines, which hugs the coastline and arrives just moments from the beach. Whether you're visiting traditional harbours, historic mining landscapes or golden beaches, this route offers an ever-changing backdrop of Cornish charm.
