Plymouth is privileged to have some fantastic restaurants led by renowned TV chefs who bring their culinary expertise and passion for fresh, local produce to the city’s vibrant food scene.
Chris & James Tanner
The Barbican Kitchen, established in 2006 by the Tanner Brothers, Chris and James, is housed within the world-famous Plymouth Gin Distillery on the historic Barbican. The brothers are celebrated for their commitment to delivering fresh, locally sourced food at realistic prices, complemented with a family-friendly welcome – children under 5 eat free. The restaurant’s menu highlights the finest Westcountry meats, vegetables, and fish from local suppliers, ensuring a true taste of the region.
Chris and James Tanner's culinary journey includes prestigious apprenticeships with top chefs and years of experience in award-winning kitchens in London, New York, France, and Bath. In 2003, they filmed their own 15-part television series, The Tanner Brothers. James Tanner is widely known for his charismatic appearances on popular shows such as Ready Steady Cook, Lorraine, Saturday Kitchen, and Saturday Cookbook. The brothers have also authored acclaimed cookbooks on chocolate and ice-cream in 2006 and 2007, followed by James’s solo book Take 5 in 2010, which offers delicious dishes with just five ingredients and has been published internationally.
Formerly owners of Plymouth’s famed Tanners Restaurant, awarded AA Restaurant of the Year in 2008, Chris and James continue to support the local food culture through various venues like Barbican Kitchen and selective culinary events, remaining active ambassadors for quality regional produce and accessible dining experiences.
