Santa Claus is coming to town for Plymouth’s Christmas Lights Switch on!
25th October 2017
Plymouth’s festive season will be launched on Thursday 16 November with the City Centre Christmas Lights Switch on with the biggest of all Christmas celebrities making a flying visit to switch on the lights, Santa Claus himself.
The hotly anticipated annual event, hosted this year by Heart Breakfast’s Matt and Victoria, will launch the Christmas countdown and mark the start of Thursday late night shopping for all those hunting for their perfect gifts. Visitors will be able to enjoy the entertainment before exploring the great shops and eateries available in the city centre and across the waterfront.
Steve Hughes, Chief Executive of Plymouth City Centre Company said: “Christmas is a magical time of year, and we’re pulling out the stops this year to provide families with a fantastic experience throughout the festive season. The Christmas Lights Switch on is the launch of the city’s festive activities and we’re looking forward to welcoming the people of Plymouth to join us in celebrating the countdown to Christmas. With entertainment from 4pm in the city centre and the start of late night shopping there’ll be plenty to see and do!”
Get your best Christmas jumper on and join the crowds on the city centre Piazza from 4pm for a packed programme of stage entertainment, building up to the exciting moment that the city centre’s beautiful illuminations will be switched on. You’ll also be able to follow Santa’s progress throughout the evening before his appearance on stage when he will deliver some early presents to lucky people in the crowd.
Cllr Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “Plymouth’s Christmas Lights Switch on is always a hugely popular event and this year is set to be no different with a great line up of family friendly entertainment to start Plymouth’s festivities, so please do come along and enjoy the fun.”
The stage programme will include performances from Plymkids, Disney Princesses, Plymouth Performing Arts Academy and popular band Rockafella. A giant Nutcracker will also be on stage to mark the launch of the popular Nutcracker Trail.
