Young people in Plymouth given the chance to make this year's Flavour Fest even better
30th May 2017
Social enterprise group the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) is offering young people in Plymouth the chance to get involved in one of the city’s most popular events.
RIO’s artisan bakery, Column Bakehouse, is a sponsor of this year’s Flavour Fest – the South West’s largest food and drink festival, and they have issued a challenge to young people in the city to help bring a social enterprise ‘flavour’ to the event.
They will offer applicants the chance to gain real world experience in everything from designing the Column Bakehouse stand to digital marketing, as well as dealing with local traders and covering the event on social media, with video and photographs.
Flavour Fest, on Friday, 2 June to Sunday, 4 June, will see the Piazza transformed, with stalls brimming with local delicacies, live music and a marquee bar. There will be more than 100 traders showcasing the best regional produce on offer - as well as cookery demonstrations from talented local and celebrity chefs – and organisers are expecting to attract more than 100,000 food lovers.
RIO spokeswoman Claire Honey said: “We’re sponsoring Flavour Fest for the second year and we wanted to give young people in the city the chance to learn about social enterprise and what it takes to make an event like this a success.
“It helps raise the profile of Column Bakehouse, our artisan bakery, and enables us to extend our message about social enterprise as a vehicle for doing business differently. It also enables us to provide opportunities to young people to get real world experience, develop their employability skills and be part of an incredibly high profileevent which will look great on their CV.”
This year Column Bakehouse has a double stand and will share its space with other social enterprise producers and suppliers including Origin Coffee and Tamar Grow Local.
The young people who get to work with RIO will be challenged to create a digital marketing campaign which encapsulates the social enterprise element of Flavour Fest 2017 and promotes buying socially and locally.
Attractions over the weekend include cookery demonstrations from local and celebrity chefs including The Treasury's Richard Pearce, Ben Palmer from The Greedy Goose and Mitch Tonks from Rockfish.
Flavour Fest patrons Chris and James Tanner will be taking part, as well as 2016 Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown and Jeremy Pang, author of the 'School of Wok'. There will also be live music featuring Sam Pentecost, the Doghouse Rhythm and Blues Band and Jack Cookson.
Flavour Fest will also be running until later in the evening this year, with traders staying open until 8pm on the opening day.
