Holby City, Mad Max and The Tardis make a visit to Plymouth for DEVCON 2018
On Saturday 3 March, the first instalment of the hugely popular DEVCON sci-fi, film and comic fair 2018 will be returning to Plymouth Guildhall.
DEVCON will welcome acclaimed actor & Holby City star Guy Henry, who has become a massive hit with Star Wars fans since his appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in which he helped reprise the character of Grand Moff Tarkin. Guy has also acted in Harry Potter and V for Vendetta. The event also features actor Alan Harris, who has starred in Doctor Who and also played the iconic role of Bossk in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
Attendees will have the chance to hear their tales of working in the industry, purchase a personally signed autograph and have their photo taken alongside the stars, next to the Dr Who TARDIS or with the Southern Troopers professional costume group and their giant Star Wars backdrop.
The Guildhall forecourt will play host to some famous movie star cars and characters, including the zombie apocalypse Mad Max inspired ‘A BUG’, brought exclusively to DEVCON events by Pod Pad Studios, specialists in steampunk retro-futurism creations. A highly crafted accomplishment, complete with working propane burner and a seriously loud engine, this next edition from creator Mark Enright will not disappoint fans.
Joining the ‘A Bug’ will be a brilliant replica of the Transformers character Barricade, in both race car form and in 8ft Robot form. DEVCON offers its visitors a rare opportunity to see both of these features together.
The March event also sees the first round of the Southwest Cosplay Championships and Plymouth’s Fancy Dress Masquerade, which is open to all ages. Participants are encouraged to don their favourite superhero costume, have some fun and have a chance to win some great prizes. The dedicated Cosplay Area, situated upstairs in the Guildhall, will be offering lots of Q&A sessions, demos and tutorials from experts in costume and prop making, gruesome special effects make-up and more.
As always there will be a huge range of traders selling a massive variety of goods, including toys (both new and vintage), comics and graphic novels, jewellery and accessories, home ware and clothing, art prints, sketches and individual commissions from our talented artists.
Organiser Lea Shelford said: “We have welcomed lots of exciting new traders, together with our inhouse favourites, that are always a big hit, all selling highly sought after and often one off exclusive items. We also have some truly talented artists and writers and our comic guests include The Etherington Brothers, creators of Monkey Nuts and Malcolm Magic. We at Events Frontier are so fortunate to have such talent on board with us and pride ourselves on being the launch pad for many to go onto careers in all of the these fields.
“Every year, we work tirelessly to offer something new and exciting for our visitors. This year, as well as our fabulous guests, amazing star cars and educational features, we have a brand new interactive Gaming Section, provided by Belong Plymouth, who are working to build up a local and national gaming community by providing a space for gamers to come and play together and try out new experiences. So far, they have enjoyed great feedback, integrating with university gaming societies and now DEVCON. They plan to offer a wide range of games, including HTC Vive Virtual Reality Gaming. There will also be a table top Gaming Area, sponsored by Red Scar Publishing, who have some new and exciting board games to share. All of these providers will offer something suitable for all ages and skill levels to try their hand at.
“Working as a team, we continue to help raise funds for our dedicated charity, Families For Children, and we are privileged that everyone comes together in helping to ‘Create Smiles and Make A Difference’, which is our company ethos and motto, and everyone helps to make the show a great success. We look forward to welcoming families and sci-fi fans of all ages alike, in the hope that we hope we can bring lots of smiles to your weekend!”
Steve Hughes, chief executive of Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “DEVCON is a real draw for Plymouth and it’s great that Events Frontier are running such a large-scale event in the city centre. This will be a great opportunity for visitors to meet film and TV stars, collect memorabilia and see comic artists at work and Plymouth City Centre Company is delighted to support it.”
