New 2022 shows on sale now at Theatre Royal Plymouth

Twelve amazing new shows are now on sale to the general public at Theatre Royal Plymouth.
A whopping 12 new productions for 2022 have gone on sale, with everything from world-class drama, opera and international dance to family favourites and West End Musical transfers. Tickets are available to book now.

Rice, The Drum, 4 to 12 February 2022
Nisha is a young hotshot executive working for Golden Fields, Australia’s largest producer of rice. Ambitious and headstrong, she’s determined to become the first female Indian CEO in Australia. She’s close to sealing a contract with the Indian government, which would see her company take over India’s national rice distribution system.
Working late nights in the office she encounters Yvette, an older Chinese migrant, who cleans up her mess. Yvette has her own entrepreneurial ambitions, but her daughter faces court after participating in a protest against the unethical practices of a national supermarket chain. The two form a powerful – if unlikely – bond as they navigate the complexities of their lives and the world at large.
Brimming with wickedly humorous observations on globalisation, politics and family, this is the UK premiere of a powerful new award-winning play from Asian-Australian writer Michele Lee.

A striking new play from Samuel Bailey, whose debut play Shook won him the 2019 Papatango Prize and Times Breakthrough Award in 2021, Sorry, you’re not a winner is a play about aspiration, social mobility and getting caught between class. It asks; if ‘making it’ means leaving everything you know and everyone you love behind – what’s the point?
NDT 2, The Lyric, 1 and 2 March 2022
One of the world’s leading dance companies and huge favourites with UK audiences, Nederlands Dans Theater possess a winning combination of balletic grace and virtuosic skill with fearless athleticism, passion and personality.
For their highly anticipated return to the UK, NDT 2 will perform works by celebrated international choreographers: Marco Goecke, Hans van Manen and Johan Inger, featuring two UK premieres.
In his very personal and moving piece about the fragility of life and love, Goecke’s The Big Crying, with songs by Tori Amos, energises the fiery power of 18 outstanding dancers to embrace a celebration of life. Van Manen’s exquisite quartet, Simple Things, featuring Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 28 in E-major, is described as ‘pure dance art’, presenting a master class in simplicity. For the finale, Johan Inger’s vibrant IMPASSE bursts onto the stage with the joyful music of French Lebanese jazz trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf, as he explores the strength of togetherness over isolation in our world today.
This is dance at its most sublime level. NDT 2 are not to be missed!
Acosta Danza: 100% Cuban, The Lyric, 4 and 5 March
International ballet superstar Carlos Acosta’s critically acclaimed Cuban company, Acosta Danza has garnered an unrivalled reputation for creating work that combines both classical and contemporary genres effortlessly, infused with Cuba’s rich musical and dance influences.
The company returns with a programme of new and existing exceptional works. Back by popular demand are, Paysage, soudain, la nuit by visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg and Impronta, which was created especially for Acosta Danza by Spanish choreographer Maria Rovira. Making their UK premieres are Hybrid, by the award-winning Cuban Norge Cedeno, Liberto by Acosta Danza dancer and choreographer Raul Reinoso, and De Punta a Cabo by Alexis Fernandez, set against the backdrop of the coast of Havana.
Animal Farm, The Lyric, 29 March to 2 April 2022
The animals of Manor Farm drive out the farmer and run the farm themselves. A revolution. And then what? Then freedom. Every animal will be free. Old Major, the prize boar, calls the animals of Manor Farm together. He has had a strange dream of a better future.
George Orwell’s world-famous fable tells the story of a revolution and its aftermath. Re-imagined by an award-winning creative team, Animal Farm is a dynamic, daring and contemporary take on a timeless story.
Animal Farm is directed by Robert Icke, whose version of 1984 (co-adapted and directed with Duncan Macmillan) was a smash-hit in the West End and on Broadway. This brand new production features puppetry by Toby Olié (whose credits include War Horse, Running Wild and Goodnight Mister Tom) and is designed by four-time Olivier award-winner Bunny Christie.
The Children’s Theatre Partnership creates bold and imaginative theatre for young people, engaging new audiences and aiming to inspire a life-long love of theatre.
Welsh National Opera: Jenůfa, The Lyric, 5 April 2022
Jenůfa has a secret. She is about to have a child out of wedlock, and hopes to marry the father before the secret is revealed. But her stepmother has other plans, and her desperate actions have terrible consequences for Jenůfa. Set across seven months, the drama unfolds, and on Jenůfa’s eventual wedding day the truth of what really happened is revealed.
A heart-wrenching tale of hope, love and despair, Jenůfa has captivated audiences for a century. WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus conducts Katie Mitchell’s acclaimed production that was described as ‘the most powerful yet’ last time it toured.

Welsh National Opera: Don Giovanni, The Lyric, 6 to 8 April 2022
Opera’s ultimate seducer is back and he’s behaving very badly. The charismatic Don Giovanni seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled ex-lovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. But when he refuses to show remorse, his past catches up with him and leads to his ultimate demise.
Based on the legend of Don Juan, Welsh National Opera’s production is set during the Spanish Golden Age. Mozart reflects both comedy and tragedy brilliantly in the score, including the Catalogue aria detailing Giovanni’s list of 2065 lovers, the sparkling Champagne aria and the high drama of the heart-stopping finale.

Welsh National Opera: Madam Butterfly, The Lyric, 9 April
On the surface a dream-like wedding for a groom and his young, beautiful bride – but behind the façade is a cruel reality. Abandoned and betrayed, Butterfly finds her world crashing around her as her one chance for freedom becomes her prison. Her desperation and pain escalate as she fights for survival with devastating consequences.
Madam Butterfly is a powerful story of unrequited love, human pain and suffering which is magnificently intensified by Puccini’s glorious music, promising a night of drama and emotion. Inspired by Puccini’s fantasy landscape of exotic pleasures, Lindy Hume’s new production interprets Butterfly’s famous story through a 21st century lens.

Billionaire Boy, The Lyric, 13 to 17 April 2022
From the award-winning West End producers of Gangsta Granny comes this amazing production of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy!
Joe Spud is twelve years old and the richest boy in the country! He has his own sports car, two crocodiles as pets and £100,000 a week pocket money! But what Joe doesn’t have is a friend. So he decides to leave his posh school and start at the local comp. But things don’t go as planned for Joe and life becomes a rollercoaster as he tries to find what money can’t buy!

The sensational brand-new production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat comes to the Theatre Royal for one week only!
The multi award-winning show has been performed in over 80 countries worldwide and has become one of the world’s most beloved family musicals.
With stars from The London Palladium Alexandra Burke and Jac Yarrow, the show features songs that have gone on to become pop and musical theatre classics, including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To Me, There’s One More Angel In Heaven and Go, Go, Go Joseph.
Fisherman's Friends: The Musical, The Lyric, 1 to 10 September 2022
Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical tells the story of the world’s most unlikely buoy band!
Based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their hit 2019 movie, Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music that will give any land-lover a mighty pair of sea legs.
When a group of Cornish fishermen came together to sing the traditional working songs they’d sung for generations, nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected the story to end on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. They are spotted by a fish-out-of-water music manager on a trip from London, who must learn that there is more to life than selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame.
So climb aboard, set sail and feel the salty sea air rush through your hair with this brand new musical.
