The historic Cremyll Ferry service will return to Admiral’s Hard Slipway in Stonehouse from Sunday 19th July 2026, following the successful completion of essential repair and stabilisation works by Plymouth City Council.
Since November 2025, the ferry has been successfully operating from Royal William Yard while Plymouth City Council undertook a programme of works to strengthen and protect the slipway structure.
The repairs have helped safeguard one of Plymouth’s most important waterfront assets and ensure the continued operation of the historic ferry link between Plymouth and Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
Ben Squire, Managing Director of Plymouth Boat Trips, which operates the Cremyll Ferry, said:
"We are pleased that the essential works to preserve and protect the slipway at Admiral’s Hard have now been completed. Throughout the programme of works, operating from Royal William Yard enabled us to maintain a reliable, safe and uninterrupted Cremyll Ferry service, and we are grateful for the support and cooperation we received during that period.
As the project comes to a close, the service will return to Admiral’s Hard in line with the reopening of the slipway. We would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding throughout the relocation, as well as Plymouth City Council and Royal William Yard for their assistance. We look forward to continuing to provide this important cross-river Inter County Ferry connection”
The Council commissioned the repairs to the historic slip – part of which is Grade II listed. Specialist marine engineers worked in stages, first replacing sheet piles and clearing large stones that fell onto the seabed. They then waited until Spring this year for the high tides to complete the main part of the work, pouring marine concrete into a large void – some 25 metres along the slip – that had been created by constant wave action.
Councillor Kate Taylor, Cabinet Member with responsibility for assets, said:
“It’s great to have the service back at the slip at Admiral’s Hard and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out. As you can imagine it was not an easy job.
With miles of coastline, quays and slipways we prioritise spend where it is most needed and I am sure people who enjoy a day out to Mount Edgcumbe – and the businesses near the slipway – will appreciate that this work is now finished.”
Passengers are advised that all Cremyll Ferry sailings from Sunday 19th July will operate from Admiral’s Hard Slipway as normal. Waterlink Ferry passengers travelling to Mount Edgcumbe will now need to walk from Royal William Yard to Admiral’s Hard to use the Cremyll Ferry for their connection.
Updated timetables and service information will be available through Plymouth Boat Trips’ website and social media channels.
