There’s so much to see and do in Britain’s Ocean City during the festive season – here are eight events that you definitely don’t want to miss.
City Centre Christmas Lights Switch On – 15 November
Let the festivities begin! Head along to the Piazza from 4pm for a bumper evening of entertainment and the start of the countdown to Christmas. The lights will be switched on at 6.30pm by Plymouth’s Invictus Games competitors, the cast of Shrek the Musical, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth – and Santa himself!
Illuminate – 22 to 25 November
Illuminate is a spectacular light-based festival taking place at Royal William Yard. Expect stunning projections, interactive experiences and perfomances as the historic Yard is brought to life after dark.
A Christmas Carol – 24 and 25 November, 1 and 2 December
UnTamed Theatre present their popular street theatre adaptation of this festive classic. Expect ghosts, laughter, good cheer and a small dose of audience participation!
Barbican Lights Switch On – 25 November
Don’t miss the waterfront’s festive switch on, with appearances from the Grinch and Santa, who will arrive aboard the RNLI lifeboat before switch on the lights on Southside Street.
Plymouth Christmas Market – 29 November to 16 December
Stop off for a warming drink at the Bavarian Bar and pick up some unique Christmas gifts from local traders at the market. You’ll find more than 50 stalls selling everything from handmade jewellery and sweet treats to real Christmas trees!
Wonder Nights at Mount Edgcumbe – 29 November to 6 January
See Mount Edgcumbe's beautiful landscape transformed into a wondrous world of enchanting lands and magical gardens, all illuminated after dark, with magical experiences around every corner.
Penguins: A LEGO® Brick Trail – 3 December to 3 January
20 penguins – 19 Rockhoppers and one Emperor – will be spreading Christmas magic throughout the city centre. Find the names of all 20 for the chance to win some incredible prizes, including a weekend family trip to LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort.
Santa Fun Run – 9 December
Join hundreds of Santas for a run, jog or walk through the city centre. The fun run is suitable for all ages and abilities, with a 4km route for adults or a shorter 2.5km route for kids.
