British Art Show 9 (BAS9) is coming to Plymouth and it’s a big deal! We know you are a keen supporter of culture in the city but we also appreciate that contemporary visual art can be challenging at times; so, to help we’ve created this guide, designed to give you key information about British Art Show 9.

  

What is the British Art Show?

The British Art Show is a celebration of British contemporary art, and is recognised as one of the most influential and ambitious exhibitions of its kind in the U.K. The exhibition takes place every five years.

   

Who runs it?

Organised by the Hayward Gallery Touring, British Art Show 9 has toured the country throughout 2021 and 2022 and has visited Aberdeen, Wolverhampton and Manchester. Plymouth is the final stop on the tour.

   

What's it all about?

The show explores three overarching themes – healing, care, and reparative history; tactics for togetherness and imagining new futures. Each city has also focused on a central theme and Plymouth’s is the migration of bodies, peoples, plants, objects, ideas, and forms. British Art Show 9 takes a critical look at art produced in Britain, from 2015 up to the present moment so is relevant to real world events happening NOW. The different emphasis to the exhibition in each city is designed to make the show as relevant as possible to local audiences.

8 October to 23 December 2022 (extended until 8 January 2023 at The Box)

  

Where can I see it?

British Art Show 9 will be hosted in four venues across Plymouth: The Box, KARST, The Levinsky Gallery (at the University of Plymouth), and MIRROR (at Arts University Plymouth). It’s free to visit the exhibitions and all four venues have disabled access, with staff and invigilators on-hand to help where needed.

    

What can I see?

37 artists will exhibit their work in Plymouth. The work is incredibly varied and includes painting, sculpture, film, installations and performance. It’s all new work that pushes at the boundaries of what is art. Information and images about the artists can be found online at Artists Archive - British Art Show 9.

Where can I find more information?

The Made in Plymouth website, run by Plymouth Culture, will be the central portal for all BAS 9 related information - www.madeinplymouth.co.uk/bas9

Plymouth is easily accessible by train with a wide range of services running from a variety of locations within England. Although some services may require a change or two.

Travelling from London takes around 3 hours with Great Western Railway, if you're coming from the north, the trip from Manchester can take 5 hours 15 minutes. 

Alternatively, the recently renovated Night Riviera Sleeper service runs Monday – Friday and Sunday evenings. Visit gwr.com/sleeper for more details on times and how to book.
