This Christmas, the National Trust’s Saltram near Plymouth is the perfect place to soak up the festive spirit. With enchanting trails, cosy cafés, and plenty of seasonal sparkle, Saltram offers something for everyone—whether you’re looking for family fun, a peaceful winter walk, or a spot of Christmas shopping. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit.
Follow The Gruffalo’s Child Trail
One of the highlights of Christmas at Saltram is The Gruffalo’s Child Trail, which brings Julia Donaldson’s much-loved story to life in the winter garden. As you wander through the deep dark wood, keep your eyes peeled for mysterious tracks and clues—whose footprints are these, and where do they lead? Along the way, you’ll find games, challenges, and plenty of festive photo opportunities to capture those special family moments.
29 November – 1 February, 10am – 4pm daily (last entry 3:20pm). Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Free event. Normal garden admission applies (free for NT members).
Meet Father Christmas in his grotto
No Christmas visit would be complete without meeting the man in red. Father Christmas will be making special appearances in his cosy grotto at the stables. Children can enjoy a magical moment with Father Christmas, take a family photo, and receive a Christmas book gift to take home.
13, 14, 15, 21, 22, & 23 December, various time slots 11am – 3.30pm. Booking essential.
£7 per child.
Festive walks and garden decorations
Wrap up warm, pop on your bobble hat, and head out for a refreshing winter walk in Saltram’s garden. See the last of the autumn colours and festive touches added by the talented garden team - don’t miss the orangery and castle folly, beautifully dressed for Christmas. It’s the perfect way to slow down and enjoy nature during the busy festive season.
Cosy up in the Winter Courtyard Café
After your adventures, treat yourself to something delicious at the Winter Courtyard Café. Picture this: a giant Christmas tree, a tipi twinkling with fairy lights, and the comforting aroma of hot chocolate and mince pies. It’s the ideal spot to catch-up with family and friends and soak up the festive atmosphere.
Indulge at the Chapel Café
For a more traditional treat, head to the Chapel Café, where festive tea and cake are served on vintage crockery. With views across the lawn to the house and comfy sofas to sink into, it’s a charming setting for a Christmassy slice of cake or a seasonal tipple.
Christmas shopping at Saltram
Looking for unique gifts? Saltram’s shop is brimming with festive inspiration. From locally made brews and bakes to jewellery, candles, and decorations, you’ll find something special for everyone on your list. On selected days, enjoy ‘Meet the Makers’ sessions, where local suppliers showcase their products and offer tastings—a great way to support local businesses and discover something new.
Please note that the house will be closed this Christmas while the team begin exciting preparatory works to make Saltram more accessible for the future. But with so much happening outdoors and in the cafés and shop, there’s still plenty to enjoy.
