2025 marks 200 years since the birth of the modern railway, and Plymouth is proudly joining communities across the country to celebrate Railway 200, a nationwide programme of events honouring two centuries of railway innovation, connection and adventure.
From the arrival of the South Devon Railway in 1848 to the iconic Royal Albert Bridge that links Devon and Cornwall, Plymouth’s railway history is deeply woven into the story of the city. Rail transformed Plymouth into a major destination for travel, trade and naval connection, and today, it continues to connect visitors and locals to some of the most scenic, historic and inspiring parts of the South West.
Throughout 2025, you’ll find a range of events, trails, exhibitions and experiences in and around Plymouth that bring the past to life, spotlight our vibrant stations and encourage everyone to explore the region by rail.
Why it matters
Railways helped shape the Plymouth we know today; driving growth, welcoming travellers, and linking us to the rest of the UK. As we celebrate 200 years since the Stockton & Darlington Railway first ran in 1825, we’re reflecting on the legacy of the railway age while looking ahead to a greener, more connected future.
