200 Exhibition returns to Royal William Yard

Royal William Yard’s 200 Exhibition has reopened, bringing back together an extraordinary collection of original artefacts, historical documents, and personal stories celebrating Plymouth’s magnificent monument, the largest collection of Grade I listed military buildings in Europe. The free, self-guided exhibition is open daily, from 11am to 5pm, at Melville Corner.

The exhibition was first staged last year as a temporary event to mark Royal William Yard’s bicentenary, attracting thousands of visitors and glowing feedback, with many calling for it to return. It is now set up across three rooms, once again showcasing treasures from The National Archives, Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, Plymouth Proprietary Library and acclaimed local historians Chris Robinson and Richard Fisher, alongside numerous submissions from the public.

Prominent Plymouth historian, Chris Robinson, commented on the opening of the original exhibition: “This is well worth visiting for anyone interested in Plymouth's remarkable heritage. Having spent years researching Royal William Yard's complex story, I'm impressed by how this collection bridges the gap between official records and human experience, giving visitors a complete picture of how this extraordinary place evolved from Rennie's ambitious vision into the destination we know today.”

Hidden histories and community connections

Original artefacts on display include naval uniforms, cookware, ceramics, rum barrels, and Naval necessities of all kinds. A replica storeroom offers a glimpse of the extraordinary scope of items the Yard once housed. Books, paintings, photographs and letters are displayed throughout the exhibit.

Visitors can journey through buildings, drawings, plans, information and testimonials, exploring the hidden histories and stories unearthed for the exhibition. A Cooper’s technical drawings are on display alongside the barrels themselves, and visitors can find out about the ship’s biscuits once baked on site – with a recipe to take home. The exhibition also tells the story of the Yard's rebirth into the contemporary destination it is today.

The exhibition draws on the 200 Stories campaign, a community initiative that called on the public to share memories, photographs, documents and family connections to Royal William Yard, revealing remarkable personal connections spanning generations. Arthur Roberts tells the tale of HMS Ark Royal and the mysteriously missing tonnes of sugar, and David Trigger MBE reflects on being one of five generations of his family to work at the Yard.

From industrial marvel to heritage destination

The exhibition takes visitors from the origins of the site in the 1300s through the creation of the Yard in the 1800s, its decline in the 1900s, and this century’s reimagining and regeneration. Royal William Yard once served as the beating heart of Royal Navy supply operations, with its innovative design revolutionising naval victualling across the British Empire, and the exhibition successfully shows how the Yard continuously adapted throughout its life.

For a different perspective, Plymouth Boat Trips has a History Cruise departing from the Yard's Marina, a two-hour evening voyage around Plymouth Sound hosted by Chris Robinson, tracing the story of Britain's relationship with the sea from the creation of the Yard to the present day. The next sailing is on 4th September.

Plymouth Walking Tours also run ‘Royal William Yard: A Maritime Masterpiece’, a new 70-minute guided walk starting at the Yard's main entrance, taking in its Georgian architecture, waterfront views and hidden corners before finishing at the Inner Basin. Upcoming dates are: 20th August, 28th August, 5th September, 9th September, 18th September and 27th September.
