About us
Step into two centuries of naval heritage with the Royal William Yard History Trail, a captivating self-guided experience that brings Plymouth’s maritime past to life.
Nestled on the waterfront, Royal William Yard is home to the largest collection of Grade I listed military buildings in Europe, originally constructed in the 1820s to serve the Royal Navy.
The trail invites visitors to explore the Yard’s rich history through a series of eleven stops, each marked with interactive plaques that reveal fascinating stories, archival images, and audio clips via QR codes.
From the tale of the brewery that never brewed, to the industrial baking powerhouse that once produced thousands of ship’s biscuits, the trail uncovers the hidden narratives behind the architecture. Visitors can learn about the underwater royal ceremony involving a diving bell, and even discover how naval life inspired the Makaton sign for “biscuit.”
Launched as part of the Yard’s bicentennial celebrations, the trail is free to explore and open daily, with maps available from the Welcome Suite or online. It’s a perfect blend of history, storytelling, and innovation — ideal for families, history buffs, and curious wanderers alike.
