What’s your favourite way to eat fish? Whether you’re a fan of crispy battered fillets served with salt and vinegar topped chips, a lover of delicately rolled sushi or simply a seafood fanatic, Britain’s Ocean City will have what you’re looking for.

We’re home to one the largest fish markets in the country and with the ocean right on our doorstep, you can look forward to tucking in to some of the freshest and most delicious fish and seafood available.

Here are ten of the best restaurants in Plymouth to enjoy the fruits of the sea.

Kuku

Set in a Grade II listed building, just seconds away from the bustle of Plymouth’s city centre, Kuku serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine and is a great place to enjoy fresh fish and seafood in a different way. Grab a seat at the sushi-bar and watch the chefs craft elegant and refined foodie masterpieces before your eyes. Share a platter of sushi, or indulge in a fish dish from the robata grill.

The Boathouse Café

You can’t get much closer to the water than this! Tucked in the fisherman’s arches near the Mayflower Steps, choose from their classic menu or the new Scallop Shack menu, which offers locally-caught scallops (from their own boat) that have been lovingly shucked, prepared and cooked to order by their expert chefs.

The Village

Along Southside Street, you’ll find this relaxed restaurant with a great reputation for serving up quality fish and seafood dishes – with a Grecian twist. One of Plymouth’s oldest seafood restaurants, they’ve been serving up delicious food for more than 27 years. Why not try the fisherman’s platter, featuring tiger prawns, scallops, mussels, calamari and more!

Quay 33

Another Southside Street gem is Quay 33, who pride themselves on their fantastic quality, locally sourced, homemade fresh food. Fish fans will love the great range of menu options, with everything from a classic fish pie to seafood risotto on offer.

Rockfish Plymouth

Mitch Tonks’ Plymouth restaurant has beautiful harbour views and serves up delicious fresh fish dishes, from traditional fish and chips to fritto misto, prawn tacos and Jersey Rock oysters. They also offer a local fish menu, which changes daily depending on the catch of the day.

Platters Seafood Restaurant

Another of the city’s oldest seafood restaurants, the focus here is all on the fish. Head inside the cosy Barbican restaurant and enjoy great tasting plates of food. You can enjoy crispy battered fish and chips, grilled fish fillets, seafood pasta and paella. Starters include classics like bouillabaisse and moules mariniere too.

The Chancel Wine Bar & Bistro

You’ll find this welcoming, family-run restaurant in Plymouth city centre, just a five minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Drake Circus. There’s lots of gluten free options, a great selection of wines – and plenty of fantastic fish dishes on the menu too, including fish stew, swordfish steak and a seafood platter.

The Harbour

Situated – unsurprisingly – right on the edge of Plymouth’s historic harbour, this restaurant has amazing views. The whole family will be happy to eat here, with a kids’ menu and veggie and vegan options alongside plenty of delicious fish dishes – with unique options including seafood tacos, tuna steak and a scallop burger. They also serve up lobster and crab every day if you’re looking for a special treat!

Barbican Kitchen

Located inside Plymouth Gin Distillery, Barbican Kitchen is run by celebrity chef duo, the Tanner brothers. The restaurant makes the most of the delicious fresh produce on offer in the South West, including fish purchased at the local market, so the menu options vary depending on the season and availability.

The Cracking Crab Company

It might not be a restaurant, but this café tucked under the Barbican wharves is a must-visit spot for seafood lovers.

The simple menu offers up delicious crab sandwiches and lobster brioche rolls alongside hand-picked meat, and you can also buy fresh crabs and lobster to take home with you, to whip up your own delicious dishes.
