It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and the most expensive! Luckily, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in Plymouth for free this year, so you can keep the kids entertained and get into the festive spirit without worrying about the budget.

Here are some suggestions for the best free things to do in Plymouth this Christmas…

Follow the LEGO® brick penguin trail

20 adorable life size LEGO brick penguins are waiting to be discovered in Plymouth city centre this Christmas. Running until 5 January, it’s free to take part in the trail and by finding the names of all penguins, you’ll be able to enter a competition to win a family trip for four people to LEGOLAND Windsor (thanks to Plymouth Citycoach) or a Penguin Feeding Experience at Living Coasts in Torquay! Pick up a free trail form from participating retailers or libraries, or download it here, and get searching!

Enjoy a story with Santa

Take a trip to Plymouth Market on Saturday 7 December for a free story telling session with Santa. He’ll be reading some of his favourite stories in his grotto, between 11am and 2pm. While you’re in the Market, don’t forget to look around as you might find one of the LEGO brick penguins!

Become a Polar Bear Explorer

Along the waterfront this winter, you’ll find 20 cute polar bear cubs hiding inside a variety of shops and businesses. Pick up a trail brochure and inside you’ll find a comic strip – waiting to be coloured in – which tells the story of George the polar bear cub. Follow the trail to find the missing words from the comic strip and you could be in with a chance of winning some great prizes, including a kids’ BMX bike! Get started by visiting the Polar Bear Explorer event page.

Get creative

If your children love getting arty, then take advantage of some of the free festive sessions at Plymouth Christmas Market. The Creation Station will be running activities for children from 10.30am to 1.30pm on Sunday 8 and 15 December. There’s no need to book and no charge – just turn up and get creative!

Explore the great outdoors

Wrap up warm and get outside for a family walk to make the most of fresh winter days! Plymouth’s beautiful location means there’s plenty of amazing scenery to enjoy, whether you take a stroll along the Hoe, a hike along the South West Coast Path or play around in Central Park.

Fun at the library

Plymouth’s libraries have lots of festive fun planned, from Christmas story times to arts and crafts activities, carol singing to film showings. Father Christmas will also be making a special appearance at some rhymetime sessions! Check out their full list of events and find what’s on at a library near you.
