Royal William Yard isn't just a stunning waterfront destination – it's an integral part of the South West Coast Path experience. This iconic collection of Grade I listed military buildings turns 200 years old this year, and the site offers walkers a perfect blend of heritage and hospitality right on England's longest National Trail.

The Stairway to Devon

The Yard's crown jewel for coast path walkers is the award-winning Devil's Point staircase, affectionately known as the "Stairway to Devon." This dramatic 63-step structure solved a centuries-old problem – Royal William Yard had always been a cul-de-sac due to its peninsular location and formidable 12-metre high defensive wall.

Opened in 2013, the contemporary steel and glass staircase punches through the one-metre thick limestone fortification, creating the vital link that allowed the South West Coast Path to flow through the Yard for the first time. Its glass viewing platform provides panoramic views over the Tamar Estuary to Cornwall, and at night, coloured LED lights transform the structure.

Heart of the Coast Path Community

Royal William Yard also holds special significance as home to the South West Coast Path Association headquarters – the charity responsible for maintaining the UK's longest National Trail. Having the guardians of this 630-mile route based right on the trail feels perfectly fitting.

The association's presence was celebrated during their 50th anniversary in 2023, when the Yard hosted the finale of an epic relay walk along the entire coast path, complete with a spectacular flag installation on The Green.

The Perfect Coast Path Experience

For walkers, Royal William Yard offers an unrivalled opportunity to pause and explore. The 9.3-mile Plymouth Waterfront Walkway takes you around the historic buildings, whilst restaurants, cafés, and bars provide everything from quick refreshments to leisurely waterside dining.

And here's the perfect finale to any coast path adventure: the new film adaptation of The Salt Path will be shown at the Yard's luxury Everyman Cinema. Where better to watch a film about the transformative power of the South West Coast Path than while sitting on the coast path itself? Join Everyman for special screenings of the film over the coming weeks.

Whether you're walking the entire trail or simply seeking a perfect Plymouth day out, discover why Royal William Yard has become one of the coast path's most beloved stops. Plan your visit at www.royalwilliamyard.com
