Plymouth’s waterfront isn’t just about the sea views (though they’re stunning!). It is also packed with independent shops, local makers, and lively markets. Make a day of it this summer - wander the lanes, browse the shops, grab a coffee, and enjoy the sea air. Here are some of our favourite spots to shop by the water:

The Barbican

If you’re into discovering hidden gems and quirky finds, the Barbican is your go-to starting point. This historic quarter is full of character, with over 30 independent shops, galleries, and tucked-away treasures for those who love to explore.

Art lovers will want to stop by Victoria Sewart Contemporary Jewellery and the Blue Peace Gallery, where you’ll find everything from bold local jewellery to modern art pieces. Sweet tooth? You’re in luck - handmade fudge shops, and ice cream parlours dot the streets.

If you’d like a taste of Plymouth’s history, pop into Jacka Bakery, believed to be the oldest working bakery in Britain, dating back to the 1600s - or the Plymouth Gin Shop inside the historic Black Friars Distillery.

Don't forget you can also use the Love Plymouth Gift Card which is the first local gift card for the city.

Royal William Yard

A scenic ferry ride with Plymouth Boat Trips from the Barbican brings you to Royal William Yard - a beautifully restored naval yard that’s now a hub for dining, entertainment, and shopping.

At its heart is the Arcade, a fresh retail space inside the historic Brewhouse building, home to a rotating mix of independent brands and creative start-ups - like Nala’s Pet Co.. Beyond the Arcade, you’ll find a variety of unique shops and experiences. Identity Fashion offers bespoke styling and limited-edition designer pieces, while Le Vignoble is a wine lounge and merchant boasting over 300 wines from around the world.

For something a little different, Steel Brew Co brews craft beers on site, and creative types can drop by Ocean Studios, where artists work and visitors can join workshops. When you need a break, BLOCK Café offers excellent coffee and free Wi-Fi, making it the perfect spot to pause and soak up the atmosphere. With so much variety packed into one historic spot, Royal William Yard is a must-visit for anyone looking to shop, explore, and unwind by the water

Good Food & Craft Market

On the first Sunday of every month, Royal William Yard comes alive with the Good Food & Craft Market - a true celebration of the South West’s best producers and makers. It’s the kind of place where you can sample artisan cheeses, fresh-baked breads, handcrafted chocolates, and world-inspired street food, all while chatting directly with the passionate people behind the products. But it’s not just about food; the market is sprinkled with local artists, jewellers, and craft makers showcasing their latest creations. With dogs welcomed and a sea breeze in the background, it’s the perfect spot to spend a Sunday morning.

Barbican Arts and Crafts Market

Every Sunday through mid-September, the Barbican Arts and Crafts Market transforms the historic Pier Master's House into a vibrant showcase of local creativity. Running from 11:00 to 16:00, this free event features a curated selection of talented artists and makers offering everything from handmade jewellery and ceramics to original prints and textiles. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Plymouth’s waterfront, it's the perfect spot to discover unique gifts and immerse yourself in the city's artistic spirit.
