Wimbledon on the Big Screen is back in Plymouth this summer
29th April 2025
Wimbledon on the Big Screen returns to Plymouth City Centre this summer with the added excitement of the opportunity to watch or take part in one of the most dynamic and fastest growing sports in the UK.
The Plymouth City Centre Company has teamed up with Padel United UK to bring Padel, a hybrid of tennis and squash, to The Piazza alongside the screening of the Wimbledon Championships from June 30 to July 13.
Padel United Uk will build a full-size enclosed court at the Sundial end of the Piazza and work with Plymouth Marjon University to create a unique city centre experience with a wide range of sporting activities for the whole family, as well as the opportunity to watch some UK Padel experts in action.
At the other end of the Piazza, we will be screening every match of the Wimbledon Championships on a state-of-the-art mobile screen in a specially enclosed area with 200 deckchairs for visitors to sit on and soak up the atmosphere.
Combine this with Wimbledon themed food and drinks from one of our concessions and visitors will have the perfect opportunity for a great summer day out.
Strawberries, Pimm’s or Prosecco, fish and chips and vegan bakes will all be available on site.
Then on finals weekend, we will add an international market in New George Street.
Watching Wimbledon and all sporting activities are FREE.
Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “It is part of our mission to make Plymouth City Centre one of the most vibrant city centres in the UK and we hope this new event for 2025 will attract thousands of extra visitors and residents into the city centre and become an annual fixture in our events programme.”
Padel is fast and exciting, played in an enclosed court with small, solid bats and is made more dynamic because you are allowed to use the walls.
Padel United UK operates 28 courts at eight venues, with four courts at Plymouth Marjon University, and is committed to building spaces where people of all ages and abilities can come together, have fun, and improve their fitness.
Richard Hall-Smith, Managing Director of Padel United UK, said: “We are delighted to work alongside The Plymouth City Centre Company and our fantastic partners at Plymouth Marjon University to bring this exciting pop-up court to the city. We hope many new players will try our court for free and enjoying this rapidly growing sport!’’
The Padel activities will be organised by staff and students from Plymouth Marjon University.
Dan Tyler, Head of Sport & Physical Activity, said: ‘We are excited to be partnering with The Plymouth City Centre Company and Padel United UK to showcase Padel to the Plymouth community. Plymouth Marjon University and Padel United UK have been in partnership since 2022, and the Padel courts on campus are a fantastic complement to our existing first-class sports facilities.’
