National Marine Aquarium welcomes two new spiny lobsters
30th September 2025
The National Marine Aquarium is delighted to announce the arrival of two spiny lobsters, who have found a new home in the aquarium’s Plymouth Sound exhibit.
These striking new crustaceans are the cousin of crabs, and barnacles, but unlike their claw-wielding common lobster relatives, they don’t have giant pincers and instead have two tiny hook-like claws. Their name comes from the spiky forward-facing armour plating their shells (carapaces). However, depending on where you are in the UK, you might also hear them being called crawfish, crayfish or rock lobsters.
These striking newcomers are usually found tucked away in rocky crevices and caves, in waters between 10 and 400 metres deep. In their new home at the NMA visitors will have the unique opportunity to witness these interesting animals up close.
The spiny residents have arrived ahead of the aquarium’s half term campaign – Are you Team Spiny or Team Slimy? Throughout October half-term, the aquarium will have a free interactive activity trail, a show and crafts to spotlight all their wonderful spiny and slimy animals and get visitors to vote for their favourite team.
Tickets for the National Marine Aquarium can be purchased over on the NMA website. To keep up to date with the latest information and updates, follow them on Facebook and Instagram
