Explore hidden gems and well-known havens from where you can witness the sheer beauty of Plymouth Sound, the UK's first National Marine Park.

There are a variety of areas in and around Plymouth that offer their own, unique view of the Sound.

Here are some of our favourites.

Plymouth Hoe and Smeaton's Tower

Head to one of the most iconic spots in the city at Plymouth Hoe. Stand back and take in the amazing views of Plymouth Sound from high above the water. Check out how many boats you can spot during your visit, with naval vessels, ferries, and yachts all regulars on the ocean waves. For even better views, ascend the 93 steps to the summit of Smeaton's Tower (seasonal opening times apply) and enjoy unrivalled views of the surrounding beauty.

Mount Batten Pier

Venture across The Sound to Mount Batten. Take a quick ferry trip from the Barbican Landing Stage and you'll arrive at this historic area, formerly home to a Royal Air Force station and flying boat base. Enjoy a stroll along the pier that stretches into The Sound and take in Plymouth's iconic landmarks from a different point of view.

Devil's Point and Firestone Bay

From Devil's Point, you'll have an unobstructed view of Plymouth Sound itself. The area is a prime position to witness both sunrise and sunset over the water. It's a great place to view naval vessels which frequently sail in and out of Devonport Dockyard.

Alternatively, just minutes away is the stunning Firestone Bay, equipped with its own tidal pool. Gaze out to Drake's Island and across to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall from here, you will not be disappointed.

Mount Edgcumbe

Take the short ferry trip from the Royal William Yard on the Edgcumbe Belle, and you'll shortly arrive at the grounds of the simply stunning Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

From here you can gaze upon The Sound from one of the park's few pebbly beaches, alternatively, head up the hill and you can view the beautiful sea from above.
