There’s something truly special about witnessing a sunrise by the sea, and Plymouth offers some of the most breathtaking early morning views along the South West coast. Summer, with its longer days and milder mornings, is the perfect season to experience the city’s stunning sunrises. Here are the top spots to catch the first light:
Plymouth Hoe
Plymouth Hoe is an iconic location for sunrise lovers. Overlooking Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, the Hoe’s elevated position provides panoramic views of the sea and city. Grab a coffee from a nearby café, find a comfy bench, and soak it all in. If are feeling bold, go for a dip on the swimming pontoons and watch the sunrise reflection on the water.
Dartmoor – Western Beacon
For a more adventurous sunrise experience, head to Dartmoor National Park, which is only a short drive from Plymouth.Start your walk from the public bridleway signposted Stowford Moorgate and head straight up onto the Beacon. From here, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views stretching over Ivybridge, the surrounding countryside, and all the way out to the sea. Expect an incredible sunrise surrounded by the wild, natural beauty of Dartmoor.
Mount Edgcumbe
Cross the water where you’ll find Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, a gem for watching the sunrise over Plymouth Sound. The park’s gardens and woodlands trails provide peaceful spots to watch the sun come up. Pack a picnic breakfast and enjoy a quiet start to the day.
Wembury Point
For a quieter, more coastal spot, Wembury Point is the place to go. Just a short trip from Plymouth, this beautiful spot offers stunning views of the sun rising over the sea, with the dramatic outline of Mewstone island nearby. It’s perfect for an early morning walk along the shore or a moment of calm before the day begins.
Firestone Bay
For the brave, Firestone Bay is a favourite for sunrise swims. The water is fresh (let’s be honest, it’s cold!) but there’s something unbeatable about diving in as the sky turns pink and orange above you. Even if you’re not going for a dip, the view alone is worth the early alarm.
