Feel like embracing the cold waters of Plymouth? The city, which is home to the UK’s first National Marine Park, is home to plenty of year-round cold water spots, with tidal pools and sheltered beaches dotted along the city’s waterfront.

Take a look at some of our suggestions on where you can take a plunge in Plymouth.

Tinside Beach – PL1 2NY

One of Plymouth’s most popular spots for cold water swimming Tinside Beach is perfectly located just moments away from Smeaton’s Tower on Plymouth Hoe.

Swimmers usually paddle out to the two buoys floating on the waves, while in the summer months, two pontoons are placed to swim out to. After a swim why not head to the much-loved Terrace Cafe and warm up with a brew or tasty treat!

Firestone Bay and Devil’s Point Tidal Pool – PL1 3QR

Firestone Bay, tucked behind Royal William Yard, offers breathtaking views over Mount Edgcumbe and Drake’s Island and is hugely popular with local cold‑water swimmers.

The adjacent Devil’s Point tidal pool at the same postcode gives a semi‑contained saltwater dip.

Pier One Steps – PL1 3DE

Just east of the Pier One restaurant on Hoe Road, this small entry point has shallow steps leading straight into Plymouth Sound.

It is a designated bathing area and usually quieter than Tinside Beach, offering a more peaceful cold water swim.

Waterfront West Cove – PL1 3DQ

West of The Waterfront Pub, steps lead down to a compact pebble cove that appears at low tide and is popular with local dippers looking for a tucked‑away spot.

It is a designated bathing area but unmarked by buoys, so swimmers should keep an eye on tide times.

Mount Batten Beach – PL9 9SJ

On the eastern side of Plymouth Sound, Mount Batten Beach offers a mix of sand and pebbles and works well for high‑tide cold water swims with a more sheltered feel.

At lower tides the rocks and pools are exposed, adding interest for post‑dip exploring, while the surrounding breakwater and headland give the area a rugged coastal character.
