Community hero unveiled to switch on this year's Barbican Christmas Lights
14th November 2025

The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership are pleased to announce that Mehdi Taheri has been nominated as this year’s Community Hero who will be switching on the Barbican Christmas lights.
Mehdi tirelessly supports a number of charity endeavours including fundraising and raising awareness about Type 1 diabetes, as well as supporting families who need a little help, and those experiencing homelessness. Described by others who have nominated him as a ‘true force for good’ and ‘one of the friendliest and most giving’, Mehdi has been heralded a true community hero.
Mehdi who received multiple nominations said of the award:"I appreciate the nominations and am delighted to accept the award. The work I do in the community would not be possible without the support and love I have from the amazing team around me and couldn't have achieved anything alone, so this award is a credit to them. It’s our duty to give back, and support the people in our community, especially at Christmas."
Sarah Gibson, Chief Executive of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “We like to offer the joy of switching on our Waterfront Christmas lights as a thank you to a hero in our community, someone who goes above and beyond to help others. During October we asked for nominations and received forty-one in all, representing a wide range of community giving and kindness.
"We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to make a nomination and to all those nominees who are doing so much for others, it was truly inspiring to hear what incredible work is being achieved across our city. Though it was a difficult decision, one nominee stood out for all they are achieving and the number of nominations for this individual. Our panel therefore selected Mehdi who clearly embodies the community spirit of the city and we’re looking forward to seeing him enjoy switching on the Christmas lights in Plymouth’s waterfront for the start of the festive season.”
Below are just a couple of the statements submitted towards Mehdi’s nomination for this year’s Community Hero award: “I am proud to nominate Medhi Taheri for recognition of his outstanding and selfless contributions to our community. Medhi is a true force for good. His tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to helping others have made a tangible difference in the lives of many.”
“What makes Medhi truly special is his ability to inspire others. His enthusiasm is infectious. He draws people in and motivates them to get involved, creating a ripple effect of kindness and action. He doesn't seek recognition; he simply sees a need and steps up.”
Mehdi will join Santa, the Lord Mayor and guests on Saturday (15th November) on stage for the Barbican Christmas Lights Switch-On at approximately 5.15pm.
The Barbican Christmas Lights Switch-On is in association with Dartmoor Zoo, with support from Cattewater Harbour and PL1 Events.
