About us
In this lecture, Lisa Woollett will talk about her latest book 'Lost to the Sea: A Journey Round the Edges of Britain and Ireland'. Inspired by growing up on the island's eroding cliffs, she goes in search of traces of lands lost to the sea and shifting sands. They range from submerged forests and Iron Age settlements to medieval port towns and more recent losses such as Hallsands. Lisa is the author and photographer of several award-winning books about the sea, beachcombing and mudlarking. Her grandfather was from a South London family in the 'scavenging professions' and she spent much of her childhood fossicking along Isle of Sheppey beaches, collecting fossils, sharks' teeth and old bottles. Lisa's memoir 'Rag and Bone: A History of What We've Thrown Away' won the Royal Society of Literature Giles St Aubyn Award for Non-fiction. The Shilstone Café will be open between 6pm and 7pm for drinks and cake.
