Learn to Fly with Pirates of the Carabina | Saturday 7 May 2022
Join the incredibly talented team from Pirates Of The Carabina for their fun and energetic aerial workshops using silks and hoops. There are sessions for beginners and those who have more experience (such as gymnasts or dancers) All workshops are free.
Workshop times:

Beginners Silks Workshops
- 1pm & 2.30pm at Barbican Theatre
- Suitable for all ages 7+ families welcome
- Length of session: 1 hour
- Max 12 participants per session
Experience the sensation of Flying on the Aerial circus rig, by learning simple tricks and shapes on Aerial Silks & Hoop. Whether you’re totally new to circus, or an Olympic gymnast, a class will limber you up and introduce you to some of the fundamentals of Aerial.
Led by Pirates Of The Carabina, this workshop is a great opportunity for little people (and their grown-ups) to let loose, have some fun and learn some new circus skills along the way.
To join the workshops you’ll need sign up for a place on the day (find us in a gazebo next to the Mayflower Tourist Information Centre) and then when you’ve booked you space head to Barbican Theatre (just up the steps).
Consent forms required to be filled in when signing up.
Advanced Aerial Hoop & Skills Workshop
- 4pm at Barbican Theatre
- Suitable for all ages 10+
- Length of session: 1hr 15 mins.
- Max 10 participants per session
The final workshop is a more advanced session for dancers, gymnasts and those with previous experience of aerial.

Step on board the Grayhound and Johanna Lucretia Tall Ships at Plymouth Pirates Weekend for free.
- 10am to 4pm Pirate Printing Press
Come and visit the pirates to print out your free colourful Jolly Roger flag design using our hand turned Pirate Printing press.
- 10am to 4pm Rotary Club
- 10am to 4pm Pirate Badge Making
Pick a picture, bring it to the machine and let's make a badge or fridge magnet together. We will have our pirate and mermaid designs plus a few general ones so something for everyone. At £1.00 a badge or fridge magnet it is a fun activity to do and will give you a lovely keepsake for your Plymouth Pirates Weekend. Come and see us in the Quay Square opposite the Navy pub and near the Punch and Judy show.

Learn to fight with a pirate sword and board enemy ships!

- 10am to 4pm The Bounty Project
Professional yachtsman, Conrad Humphreys launched the Bounty Project in 2017 after recreating the incredible open boat voyage of Lieutenant Bligh, who along with 18 men was cast adrift following the Mutiny on the Bounty. The recreation was filmed for a major Channel 4 series, Mutiny which aired in 2017.
Conrad acquired the replica boat from Channel 4 and set up the Bounty Project so that young people could experience the incredible history of Captain Bligh and his remarkable voyages.
Bligh was a Plymothian and set sail from Plymouth as the sailing master for Captain James Cook. In August 1768, Cook and Bligh set sail from “Barn Pool” to circumnavigate the world and chart many island in the South Pacific.
Conrad is a triple round the world yachtsman and adventurer who in 2005 became the fifth British sailor in history to complete the Vendee Globe.

- 12pm & 3pm Pirate Acrobatic Show (Sunday only)
Watch an amazing acrobatic pirate performance by Cornish based company Boom Circus. The 45 minute performance is brimming with energy and features amazing acrobatics and stunts.
- 2pm Plymouth Morris Men (Sunday only)
See the Plymouth Morris Men perform traditional English dances from the end of the 19th Century. These dances are unique to Plymouth Morris and will not be seen anywhere else. Their costumes are inspired by Plymouth’s links with the sea and its sailing history.
Everyone is welcome at any time to come and have a look or maybe have a go.
