About the Sea Shanty Bands
They are a bunch of rowdy rumbustious pirates, who love to sing rocky sea shanties and our own original songs of the sea. All dressed in full pirate kit and with full pirate attitude.
From South Devon, The Old Gaffers have been rocking assorted boats and all sorts of other stages since 2010. With their own brand of humour, no nonsense, no gimmicks, sea shanties and sea songs they have entertained audiences at festivals and concerts the length and breadth of the country.
They have morphed into the present crew of 10 with an average age of 48 (sorry that should be waist size) and a groupie fan base of well over one; we are going from strength to strength!
Find them at www.oldgaffers.co.uk or on Facebook: Old Gaffers Shanty Crew
The Last Watch
More information coming soon.
The Tars have been performing together since 2003 and are no strangers to the Barbican, where they have entertained in many of the local pubs and bars as well as on the quayside. Often they are there to help the RNLI raise funds.
They will be singing a mixture of harmonies and fine musicianship, but mainly lots of high energy and familiar songs with a nautical flavour that you will recognise and want to join in with!
The Chudleigh Shantymen formed in 2014, from a group of ‘old boys’ who would ‘meet down the pub’ of a Friday evening, to sing Shanties. Their notoriety quickly spread. They also perform Sea Songs written especially for them.
The Chudleigh Shantymen currently have a crew compliment which ranges between 9 and 13.

Cornish sea-punk folk band JollyRoger fall somewhere between the sound of The Dropkick Murphys and Levellers. Inspired by the sea and growing up in the pirate haven of Penzance, they use nautical metaphors and pirate history to speak out about mental health issues and also the better things in life, like drinking beer. JollyRoger explodes with energy on stage and are an eclectic mix of shanty vibes, humour, and Celtic punk.
The Great Sea Choir are a 45 strong mixed voice a cappella choir based in Plymouth directed by Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall of folk duo Suthering. The choir is known for their intricate and rhythmic arrangements and the high quality of their singing. Despite being a mixed-ability group of un-auditioned singers, the choir create an impressive and professional sound, brilliantly executing a wide range of folk music; from unique modern takes on traditional songs to textured, choral interpretations of contemporary music. Their sense of community, which is at the heart of what they do, shines through in their singing. This is a vibrant choir with a fresh take on folk arrangements, singing in up to eight-part harmony. Their songs are moving, exciting and delivered with passion.
"The Great Sea Choir put on a truly captivating show - the kind you only achieve when every single member is absolutely committed to the performance. Riveting and original, we look forward to our next encounter!” - Gilmore and Roberts BBC Radio 2 folk award nominees

The Last Watch are four blokes who hail from the Tamar Valley in East Cornwall.
They are an acapella group who do a variety of sea songs, folk and shanties, some old standards and some originals.
We are Wylde Water: proudly Bristol based we sing Shanties and songs of the sea, and blend tradition and modernity to give our own progressive take on traditional storytelling tunes. Formed from the core regulars of a Bristol based Shanty Pub Session, we've grown into performers at Shanty Festivals and events whilst remaining a stronghold crew at the session. Expect to hear stories, harmonies, and a good dose of 'Shantics' from some fresh faces on the Shanty scene.
Jon Fazal & Cat Rose are an emerging singing-songwriting folk duo based in Plymouth. Their songs have been described as ‘combining dreamy, catchy melodies with storytelling lyrics that paint vivid pictures in your mind.’ Many of their songs are inspired by the complicated beauty of their coastal city.
Listen to Seaweed in the Fruit Locker. They are a LGBTQIA+ sea shanty choir formed by artist Rhys Morgan; exploring queer motifs within seafaring history and collective performance in marginalised communities through the tradition of shanty singing. The choir have used their lived experience to rework existing shanties and inspire new ones, continuing the tradition of these hybrid folk songs being adapted time and again through generations and across cultures.
All aboard the good ship Black Friday - join her crew and captain Tom for another stormy crossing of the Celtic sea of folk-punk. We don't know where we're going and we don't know when we'll get there but we'll have some fun along the way...
The six strong, unstoppable Black Friday play a foot-stomping mix of high energy, home-brew folk-punk and celtic tunes, travelling across Cornwall and lands far beyond.
