Plymouth is a city with more going on than you might expect. From early morning coffee spots to late-night takeaways, independent shops, live music and great pubs, there's plenty to check out if you know where to look. 

This guide isn’t just about saving money (though we’ll still point out the good deals). It’s about finding the best of the city - places to eat, drink and things to do between lectures, on the weekends or when family come to visit!  

                    

Places to Eat  

Barbican Pasta Bar 

A local favourite, Barbican Pasta Bar has been serving up comforting pasta dishes in a relaxed, friendly setting for over 30 years. The Pollo e Funghi is a popular choice, but the menu has plenty to suit all tastes. With reasonable prices and great portion sizes, it’s a great sport for a meal with friends. Make an evening of it and go for a stroll along the Barbican afterwards!  

Cosmic Kitchen 

Cosmic Kitchen is a 100% vegan spot that manages to feel both upmarket and relaxed. Nestled in a Mediterranean-inspired courtyard, it’s the perfect place to enjoy fresh, vibrant dishes like wraps, salads, and indulgent cakes which are all plant-based and full of flavour. Their menu features creative twists on classics, and the Reuben Toastie is a must-try, packed with smoky, tangy goodness that even non-vegans rave about. 

Harbourside Fish & Chips 

If you’re craving classic fish and chips, Harbourside Fish & Chips on the Barbican is a go-to spot. Just steps from the water, it offers that traditional seaside experience with freshly cooked, flaky fish and crispy chips. They’re also great at catering to different dietary needs, they even have a fully gluten-free menu available at their sister venue, Barbican Fish Bar, right next door. 

Zephyr Burgers

If you’re in the mood for a proper smash burger, Zephyr Burgers in North Hill serves up smashed patty cheeseburgers alongside fries. The Plymouth restaurant is located on Drake Circus and has been serving its burgers since 2017, with its aged-beef patties earning a mention among some of the UK’s best burger spots. It’s a great option for a relaxed meal when you’re craving a classic burger and fries.

The Waterfront 

Just a short stroll from Plymouth Hoe, The Waterfront combines maritime charm with a fresh, modern vibe. Their seasonal British menu includes everything from hearty lunches to a popular Sunday roast, with options to suit different diets. The bar’s well-chosen selection of ales and wines pairs perfectly with the relaxed atmosphere and spacious seating. It’s the perfect place to stop in for a drink or a bite after a walk along the Seafront.  

Compadres

Compadres serves up Mexican street food packed with bold, flavourful ingredients. Choose between tacos, burritos, nachos, or a bowl, then customise your meal with a selection of fillings, salsas, and sauces. It’s a great option for a quick lunch or a relaxed, filling meal in the heart of the city.

Mr Wok Thai Noodle Bar

For Thai food packed with flavour, Mr Wok Thai Noodle Bar offers a wide choice of freshly prepared dishes, including Pad Thai, noodle boxes, Thai curries, stir-fries, soups, and chef’s specials. There are plenty of options to choose from, including tofu and vegetable dishes, as well as gluten-free noodles and rice for selected dishes. With a takeaway at Drake Circus and a restaurant on Tavistock Place, it’s a handy option for a quick lunch, casual dinner, or takeaway.

Tilt 

Tilt is all about bold, exciting flavours inspired by Korean street food, served as small plates and sliders perfect for sharing. It’s a great spot to gather with friends and sample a variety of tasty dishes, each packed with punchy, fresh ingredients. 

Leandra 

Located in the West End of the city, Leandra specialises in Greek and Mediterranean dishes. The mezze platters are a good way to sample a range of options, and there are set lunch and dinner menus that offer good value.

Places to drink 

Wetherspoons (The Union Rooms & Gog & Magog) 
A classic choice for students looking for affordable drinks and a lively, no-fuss atmosphere. Both pubs serve a wide range of beers, ciders, wines, and spirits, along with crowd-pleasing food if you need something to line your stomach. 

The Union Rooms is based in the city centre and is ideal for starting a night out in town. Gog & Magog is set right on the Barbican, making it a perfect stop before an evening by the waterfront or a stroll along the cobbled streets. 

Bar Rakuda 
Bar Rakuda is a laid-back spot on the Barbican waterfront, popular for its live music, friendly atmosphere, and student-friendly deals. There’s something going on most nights, from acoustic sessions and DJs to open mic Tuesdays. The food focuses on handmade pizzas and pasta dishes made with local ingredients, and vegan options are available too. Their pizza and pint deal is perfect for sharing with friends, and the 2 for £14 cocktail offer means you can enjoy something a bit fancier without spending too much. 

The Ship 
Right on the Barbican, The Ship is a solid choice for affordable pub food, a relaxed atmosphere, and regular live music. It’s especially popular in warmer months thanks to its sunny outdoor seating, which overlooks the water. With a welcoming crowd and plenty of space to sit and unwind, it’s an easy pick for a casual meet-up or a laid-back evening out. 

Kitty O’Hanlon’s
Plymouth’s original Irish pub, Kitty O’Hanlon’s is full of character and always buzzing. Known for its lively atmosphere, traditional décor, and packed events calendar, it’s a great choice if you’re after live music, DJs, or just a pint in a proper pub.  

Caffeine Club 
Caffeine Club is a popular Plymouth spot with students, it is open 24 hours and loved for its mix of great coffee, cocktails, and comfort food. It is great for everything from grabbing a milkshake after a night out, to fuelling a late study session, or meeting mates for a pre-drink, this quirky café-bar has you covered.

Places to go out 

The Depo

Located on Union Street, The Depo is a multi-genre music venue in the heart of the city. With different events and music styles throughout the year, it’s a good place to check out if you’re looking for a lively night out.

Annabel’s Cabaret & Discotheque

Over on the Barbican, Annabel’s Cabaret & Discotheque offers a mix of live music, entertainment and dancing, with a relaxed area for those who want to take a break from the dance floor. It’s open Friday and Saturday nights, with events running into the early hours.

Popworld Plymouth

For a night of nostalgic hits, Popworld Plymouth is a popular choice. Right on Union Street, it’s all about big singalong tracks, dancing and a lively atmosphere, with late nights throughout the week. There is also a revolving dancefloor! 

OutOut Plymouth

If you’re looking for something a little bigger, OutOut Plymouth brings Ibiza-inspired nights to Plymouth, with DJs, club events and plenty of opportunities to dance until late. Check their upcoming events to see what’s on.

Things to do 

Plymouth Arts Cinema  

If you’re into film and want something beyond the usual blockbusters, Plymouth Arts Cinema is well worth checking out. This independent venue screens everything from indie and international films to thought-provoking documentaries and cult classics. It’s a cosy, creative space with discounted student tickets and occasional special events, Q&As, and film festivals. It is a great alternative night out if you want something a bit different. 

The Box 

The Box is Plymouth’s flagship museum, gallery, and cultural space — and entry is free. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions covering everything from local history and archaeology to contemporary art, photography, and film. It’s a great place to dip into for an hour or spend a lazy afternoon exploring. The current exhibition, Remember, Respond, Resist, is a powerful look at global activism through posters, design, and protest art.  

National Marine Aquarium  

Right on the waterfront, the National Marine Aquarium is the largest in the UK and home to over 5,000 marine animals. It’s genuinely impressive, with massive tanks, immersive walk-through zones, and regular talks that make it more than just a one-time visit. Student tickets are £23 — but that gets you unlimited entry for a whole year, making it a great shout for repeat visits or even just a peaceful break from uni life. 

Royal William Yard 
One of Plymouth’s most scenic spots, Royal William Yard is a mix of history, culture with a modern twist. Once a naval supply yard, it’s now home to independent shops, bars, restaurants, and galleries, with plenty of space to wander, sit by the water, or grab a coffee. It's a great place to spend a slow afternoon or head to in the evening for food and drinks. Keep an eye out for its good food & craft markets which happen on the first Sunday of every month!  

The Market Hall 

Located in Devonport, The Market Hall is a creative tech hub housed in a former fruit and veg market. Its highlight is a 15-meter immersive dome with full 360-degree visuals and surround sound that transports you into different worlds. Inside, you’ll find bright co-working spaces, meeting rooms, and a production suite for digital creators. The café serves good coffee, tasty food, and offers free Wi-Fi, making it a great spot to work or study. 

You can book co-working slots through membership or hire meeting rooms if you need a quieter space. It’s a welcoming place for students, freelancers, and creatives looking for an inspiring environment.
