About us
Armada Way is a welcoming green corridor in the heart of Plymouth, reimagined as part of a £29.8 million regeneration project designed to enhance the city centre for residents and visitors alike.
At its centre, The Rill flows gently through the space, offering a calming water feature where visitors can pause, paddle and enjoy the movement of water through the city. Lined with more than 25,000 new plants, over 500 new seats and open lawns, the avenue provides plenty of space to unwind, meet friends or take a break from shopping.
A vibrant new playground along Armada Way also creates a fun, family-friendly space for children to play and explore.
Tree-lined walkways and improved accessibility make it easy to explore, while thoughtfully designed lighting and landscaping enhance the atmosphere throughout the day and into the evening. With its blend of nature, water and contemporary design, Armada Way creates an inviting environment for everyday use and city-centre events.
The Playground
Armada Way is home to one the country's biggest city centre playgrounds following the redevelopment works. Armada Way’s dynamic play area offers a range of experiences for children of all ages, combining adventure, imagination and sensory play. A sandy desert-themed zone features wooden huts, swings and slides for younger children, while the New Lands area invites older explorers to climb a rocky mountain and discover a pirate shipwreck.
Interactive water jets and a flowing stream with scoops, buckets and weirs provide hands-on fun for budding engineers. The woodland-inspired climbing area includes treehouses, cargo nets, swing bars and a striking dodecahedron hideaway, all set above soft mulch for safe play. For a calmer experience, the grassland sensory zone features a sound stone, tubular chimes, a giant Newton’s cradle and step-on windpipes, offering gentle, immersive play.
The Rill
The Rill on Armada Way is a striking, granite-lined man-made stream that forms the spine of the new boulevard, bringing movement, sound and a sense of calm to the heart of the city. Beneath the surface, it plays a clever hidden role in Plymouth’s regeneration, linking to an innovative sustainable drainage system made up of rain gardens, reed beds, pipes and underground storage tanks that can hold large volumes of rainwater and surface run-off.
Instead of sending this water straight into the sewers, the system stores and recirculates it, using it to feed over 25,000 new plants and 176 trees along Armada Way and reducing runoff into the combined sewer network by around three quarters. This makes The Rill both a beautiful feature for visitors to enjoy and a hard-working piece of green infrastructure that supports biodiversity, resilience and a greener future for Britain’s Ocean City.
Performance Spaces
Visitors can expect vibrant performances across the full length of Armada Way, from the Amphitheatre through to The Piazza, transforming the space into a lively cultural route. The streets will come alive with an exciting mix of live music, street entertainment and artistic showcases, creating an immersive atmosphere for everyone.
