A new look for The West End in Plymouth City Centre
2nd September 2019
A bright new look has been created for the West End of Plymouth City Centre as part of a drive to attract more visitors and shoppers and create a sense of local pride.
The Plymouth City Centre Company has launched a brand to give the West End its own identity and to support local businesses.
The heritage of the area has been carefully considered in the logo with the introduction of the coloured shapes. These are not only a nod to the original tiles that you can still see around Frankfort Gate but also to the lines the various buildings create, including that of Plymouth Market. The fact these shapes interlock represent the coming together of all aspects of The West End Plymouth, including people, businesses, buildings and visitors alike.
The colourful new look was unveiled on Saturday 31 August as hundreds of visitors flocked to the annual West End Carnival, and will now be visible all over the West End in shop windows, on empty shop fronts, advertising hoardings, street furniture and lamp post banners.
It will also be used as part of a wider campaign to promote the area around Plymouth Market which has a growing reputation for the quality and diversity of its independent shops, restaurants and cafes.
Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “The new brand provides a positive and visible change. The injection of colour was desperately needed and we will now use this as a catalyst for further improvements.”
The brand was developed with local businesses, Plymouth City Council and other partners and is part of a wider regeneration project for the West End.
Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance and city centre champion said: “I’m a huge fan of the West End. It’s got a unique feel and plays a very important role in the life of the city centre.
“We’re keen to support the shops and businesses here which is why we invested £4 million to refurbish Plymouth Market to show off its incredible architecture and to make it a more attractive place to visit.
“A splash of colour in and around the streets is going to look great – go and see for yourself, there’s a lot going on.”
Other measures include transforming unloved routes into the West End including Market Way which has gone from a steep concrete ramp to a landscaped path. Further work will start later this year to improve the public space in Frankfort Gate.
