About us

1959 is considered to be a highly influential year in the development of modern jazz, with a number of new sub-genres coming to the fore including bossa nova and modal jazz. 1959 also saw the release of some of jazz's finest albums including Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Dave Brubeck's Time Out. Sixty years on, The Neil Maya Quartet celebrates some of the most famous recordings from that year. Neil's inspiration for this new project is due in part to his interest in the music of Dave Brubeck, explored through his Brubeck Project, which has played throughout the South West over the last two years. Neil also has a real affinity with the '50s approach to jazz for which 1959 seems to reach a high point. Jazz also played an important role in the fight for racial equality, particularly in the United States, and this is also explored in the performance. As well as featuring classic works by Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck, the set will include John Coltrane's Giant Steps, Charlie Mingus's Ah Hum and more. Over the last decade the band has delivered high quality, accessible music for all ages. Saxophonist Neil Maya is joined by Gav Martin on piano, Kev Sanders on bass and Preston Prince on drums.
