About us

'Harena Now' is an upcoming exhibition by Josie Purcell featuring her alternative and often camera-less photography practice investigating the global sand crisis.

With an MA in Photography from Falmouth University, Josie has exhibited internationally and also delivers photographic workshops through her enterprise, ShutterPod. With a love for the natural world, much of her work responds to the impact we have on the Earth, whether on a local or global scale; her images are created with alternative processes to omit certain chemicals and lessen her photographic footprint.

Some experts predict that, due to the booming demand for sand in industries such as construction and beach re-nourishment, sand may run out. Already seemingly impossible, this crisis has also led to a growth in sand mafias and the loss of homes, livelihoods and lives.

Deliberately not choosing to create documentary photographs, Josie aims to spark conversations through the aesthetics of her images melding various sources of inspiration; and will be hosting a talk about her work and the sand crisis here at Devonport Guildhall on Saturday 14th of September at 1pm.

Join us for this thought-provoking exhibition from 14th to 26th September.

Opening hours:

9am – 3pm Monday to Friday
9am – 1pm Saturdays
