About us
'semaphore' (noun): "an apparatus for conveying information by means of visual signals, as a light whose position may be changed."Lee Panizza's solo show of paintings at the Cells, Devonport Guildhall, 9-23 July, is a very visual affair. She is showing four strands of work, all linked by her exploration of ambivalent visual clues.
Her work is an inquiry on abstraction. It is always about perception and light, with recurring references to earth and sky. They are semi-geometric, expressive compilations of layers and shadows, be they traditional oil paintings, painted jigsaw puzzle pieces or collaged works of torn and cut paper.
These compressed exercises in time and space have the atmosphere of portentous change. The complexities of multiple light sources and unexpected shadows evoke a sense of hidden meanings on the verge of explanation.
The works are both serious and fun. Dynamic, beautiful, and occasionally witty.
