Many of us have reached the end of dry January or Veganuary, so lets look ahead to a fabulous February! Our Friday Five will give you some inspirational ideas on well-being, including enjoyable exercise, fantastic food and arts and crafts.

Great places for a walk

Whether it’s a stroll, a hike, a jog or a bike ride, Plymouth is in such a fantastic location to enjoy the great outdoors. Not only do we have the stunning views across Plymouth Sound from the Hoe, but there are also plenty of gorgeous countryside and woodlands to explore within easy reach, including Ham Valley and Plymbridge Woods. Use the ferry links to access Mount Batten, Mount Edgcumbe or Cawsands. Plus we’ve got Dartmoor National Park right on our doorstep. Walking with family and friends is the perfect way to explore the outdoors whilst getting some great exercise.

Onto the next challenge!

Are you up for a new challenge? Why not give couch to 5k a go, or check out the nearby Park Runs. They are free to take part, and are a really friendly community, bursting with encouragement, whether you run or walk the 5k route.

There are lots of great spaces to go for a run, here are a few suggestions: Saltram, Plym Valley, or one of the many parks including the largest in Plymouth - Central Park. Take in the sea air from Mount Batten and try running out to the pier. You may feel inspired to enter Britain's Ocean City Running Festival, on 14 May 2023, encompassing the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K.

Fantastic Food and Crafts

After all that exercise, take some time out and try some new tasty treats at the Royal William Yard Good Food & Craft Market. Taking place on the first Sunday of each month, from 10am to 3pm, you can enjoy some delicious local produce, whether it’s to eat on the day or to take away, you will be spoilt for choice. Explore the markets handcrafted gifts, made by some of the region’s most talented artists and makers.

Enjoy a feel-good ballroom sensation

It's your last chance to catch Strictly Ballroom: The Musical at Theatre Royal Plymouth, with its final show tomorrow (Saturday) before departing on its UK and Ireland tour. The performance which stars Strictly Come Dancing favourite Kevin Clifton and BBC's Eastenders' Maisie Smith, is sure to make for an unforgettable evening under the glitter ball that will send your heart soaring and toes tapping!

Spring over to The Box!

If you haven’t visited The Box yet, why not go this weekend, and see their Spring programme which features exhibitions that celebrate Plymouth's amazing art collection and the work of female artists.

The Spring exhibitions will start on 4 February, and include: 'Sue Williamson: Between Memory and Forgetting', 'Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings: Portraits' and 'Making a Mark: Dazzling Drawings from the Cottonian Collection'. You can also see a new presentation of paintings and decorative art called ‘People and Place: Art Collection Showcase’.

Plymouth is easily accessible by train with a wide range of services running from a variety of locations within England. Although some services may require a change or two.

Travelling from London takes around 3 hours with Great Western Railway, if you're coming from the north, the trip from Manchester can take 5 hours 15 minutes.

Alternatively, the recently renovated Night Riviera Sleeper service runs Monday – Friday and Sunday evenings. Visit gwr.com/sleeper for more details on times and how to book.

We recommend using GWR.com to search for the fastest and best route for your journey, and book in advance for the best price.
