The Barbican & Sutton Harbour
The historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour are the heart of the city's heritage with the oldest buildings and the greatest number of historical stories.
It's also a place where an eclectic cuisine mix of Italian, Greek, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Himalayan, Mexican and British restaurants may all be found!
Plymouth’s beautiful waterfront is home to a great range of art galleries, antique shops and quirky independent boutiques set amongst picturesque scenery and more than 200 listed buildings, many of them Tudor and Jacobean.
A wander along Southside Street will lead you to lots of art galleries, selling a range of originals and prints, plus unique glass and homewares, cards and posters. Don’t forget the world famous Plymouth Gin Distillery is here too, so you can pick up a bottle of the city’s favourite tipple or some extra special glasses.
Explore The House That Jack Built, home to an eclectic collection of shops selling gifts.
If it’s wine lovers you’re buying for, head over to Sutton Harbour to explore the recently opened HonkyTonk Wine Library, selling wines from around the world.
Sutton Harbour is perfectly placed to make the most of all Plymouth has to offer, from unparalleled historic landmarks to some of the city’s largest and liveliest family attractions. The National Marine Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the UK, is at the entrance to the harbour, and visitors can also take boat tours to learn more about the local marine environment – or even catch a fish and learn how best to cook it. The lively waterfront culture of Sutton Harbour offers a welcome like no other, with unique independent shops interspersed with a diverse range of first class restaurants, cafes and bars.
Whilst you’re in the area, make sure to visit the Mayflower Steps, where the Pilgrims are believed to have embarked the Mayflower for a new life in America in 1620. Find out more about the Mayflower and its passengers, and pick up some Plymouth souvenirs at the Tourist Information Centre and Mayflower Museum, just over the road from the steps.
