About us

Join us for our Anniversary Evening Lecture in Cornonation Week for a talk recalling the visit of the 'Sailor King' to Plymouth in 1827 on Thursday, 4 May (7.30pm).

Two days before the coronation of King Charles III , we tell the story of the Royal Visit of 1827 when his predecessor, William IV, came to Devon.
Discover more about his life, Naval controversies, visit, and the people he met when he came to town.

The lecture, which will be given by Owen Ryles, Chief Executive of the Plymouth Athenaeum. Owen is a Fellow of the The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, the Linnean Society and the Zoological Society.

His previous talks include Education, enlightenment and entertainment: Plymouth Mechanics' Institute 1825-1899 , Walking through the storm: William Snow Harris v The Admiralty, Charles Hamilton Smith: Writer, Illustrator, Solider, Spy and Darwin, Dinosaurs and the Plymouth Athenaeum.
