About us
Louis Dyson discusses his research into the six custodians of the Cottonian Collection of oils, works on paper, sculpture and books which were collected primarily during the mid-late 18th century. The Cottonian Collection was donated to the Plymouth Proprietary Library in 1853 and transferred to the then Plymouth City Museum, now known as The Box, in 1915.
Louis, who has been working for the The Box, is an Art History graduate from the University of Plymouth and was awarded the 2021 Maureen Attrill Bursary.
He will be completing a report on the project which will be published online for The Box's 2022 programme.
His research includes Charles Rogers (1711-1784), who collected the bulk of the collection, mostly drawings and prints, and the last custodian William Cotton III of Ivybridge (1794-1863).
