About us

The Club's next great gig will be for many people the gig of the year!
GREG ABATE with The Craig Milverton Trio.
Plymouth Jazz Club is proud to present the brilliantly talented, versatile and exciting American saxophone star Greg Abate on his twenty-one date tour of the UK.
In the mid 70's after finishing a four year program at Berklee College Of Music, Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years, then in 1978 formed his own group and from there had the opportunity to play tenor sax with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra from 1986 to '87. Following this experience Greg ventured out as a soloist playing Jazz Festivals, Jazz Societies and Jazz Clubs throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad, including most of Europe, UK, Moscow and Georgia Russia.
Greg recorded his first CD Live At Birdland NYC in 1991 on the Candid Jazz Label and has since made many records with his own groups, including with American legend Phil Woods, and has been nominated for a Grammy award.
Greg is also an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College and in 2016 was inducted into the RI MUSIC HALL OF FAME.
"Greg Abate is one of the most appealing saxophonists on the scene today…. he plays music with sweetness and daring." - Jim Merod, New Jazz Recordings, USA.
Greg has become highly popular in the UK and plays to sell-out crowds at most venues. He has become well-known at festivals for his duets in various groups with Alan Barnes, the top UK saxophonist. At the Swanage Jazz Festival he received a standing ovation from the audience.
Backing Greg is the amazingly talented trio led by Craig Milverton with Coach York and Al Swainger. Craig regularly features in the British Jazz Awards as part of Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen ('Best Small Group') and as winner or runner-up in the 'Best Pianist' category.
Come along to see one of the World's top saxophonists at Plymouth Jazz Club, The Royal British Legion Club, Tailyour Road, Crownhill, Plymouth PL6 5DH at 7.30 pm. on Sunday November 6th.
Admission £15 (PJC members £12)
